THE STARTING SALARY FOR THIS POSITION IS LIMITED TO $39671 - $48000.Salary offers for the selected candidate are based on the candidates education and experience related to the position as well as our agency budget and equity.


The primary purpose of this position is to provide litigation and pre-litigation support to the Labor Section Head and attorneys in the Section. Work includes generating tables of authorities formatting briefs compiling trial notebooks and other litigation and pre-litigation support.

Litigation Pre-Litigation and Secretarial Support to Section Head and other Attorneys

  • This position will provide secretarial support to the Section Head and multiple attorneys in the Section. This person will type letters memos envelopes briefs motions orders petitions answers and a variety of other legal documents. The person in this position will prepare exhibits for cases or filings; set up and manage files (including the use of Legal Case Tracker or any similar program) during the course of a case; and maintain files in an orderly fashion.
  • This position will assist in case preparation by photocopying cases and statutes scanning documents and pleadings to PDF format for storage in the appropriate electronic case folder for each attorney uploading to Legal Case Tracker or any similar program and for court or administrative tribunal electronic filing purposes. This position will assemble exhibit notebooks for cases with indexes and tabs for photocopies of the separate exhibits the attorney plans to introduce into evidence.
  • Criminal briefs are received stamped logged distributed and set up in a file by the person in this position. This person obtains the trial transcript and is responsible for inputting the due dates on the office calendars. The person will format briefs and generate Tables of Authorities.
  • Photocopying and scanning of documents is work that can be high in volume.


General Office Duties

  • This position will fill out all forms necessary for advance travel approval and for post travel reimbursement.
  • The filing needs of this office vary according to case load. All files must be maintained in an organized manner whether they are paper files or electronic files so that they may be retrieved on short notice during the course of a case.
  • This position will handle incoming and outgoing mail.
  • This position will process files for archives in accordance with the archive schedule when the files are no longer current.
  • This position keeps track of supplies on hand such as printer paper toner legal pads pens exhibit stickers. This position stores the supplies so they may be readily located by Section members.

Handling Calls Office Visits and Consumer Letters from Third Parties

  • The person in this position will answer the telephone and direct consumer calls and public inquiries to the appropriate agency or attorney. The person in this position must have knowledge of the general jurisdictional responsibilities of the client agencies of the Section.
  • The person in this position will greet visitors to our office. The person in this position determines the visitors needs and directs the visitor to the proper waiting area and sets up the meeting.
  • This position will have telephone contact with other employees from the North Carolina Department of Justice (DOJ) and client agencies the general public the private bar and from corporate counsel businesspeople and other state and local government employees.


Performs Special Project Assignments and Other Administrative Duties

  • This position handles any special projects which might arise to meet the needs of the DOJ. The position will also perform any special projects or additional duties assigned by the Labor Section Head or the Civil Division Head.

The salary grade for this position is NC09. State employees are encouraged to apply for positions of interest even if the salary grade is the same as or lower than their current position. Division Information:

The primary responsibility of the Civil Division is to provide comprehensive legal assistance to the Department of Administration the Department of Insurance the Department of Labor the Department of Revenue the Department of Transportation the Office of the Secretary of State the Office of the State Auditor the Department of the State Treasurer the Department of Agriculture the Department of Cultural Resources the Administrative Office of the Courts the Department of Information Technology and various boards and commissions.


The Labor Section acts as advisor and legal representative to the North Carolina Department of Labor including all of its divisions and bureaus.


Department Information:

TheNorth Carolina Department of Justice led by the Attorney General of North Carolina represents the state state agencies and elected officials and defends the rights of the people of North Carolina. The Department handles all state criminal appeals cases and assists district attorneys with complex criminal cases at their request. Knowledge Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

High school diploma or General Educational Development (GED) diploma and four years of related administrative experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Applicants seeking National Guard Preference must attach a NGB 23A (RPAS) if you are a current member of the NC National Guard in good standing.
