Job Description

Position: Long Term Sub - School Counselor

Location: Deer Park High School

Dates:

Job Summary:

The high school counselor is an integral member of the high school team and helps to create a positive school culture for academic achievement career and college readiness and personal/social development. This position supports students in successfully achieving their educational goals through academic planning career guidance and overcoming personal barriers to success. The high school counselor collaborates with the principal and staff on issues related to the success of high school students providing crisis intervention and short-term counseling services to students.

Duties Responsibilities or Essential Functions:

  • Advise caseload of students toward achieving educational goals and obtaining a high school diploma
  • Provide culturally competent career educational and short-term personal counseling.
  • Identify individual learning needs of students and provide referral and/or assistance as needed.
  • Maintain knowledge of state graduation requirements
  • Provide crisis intervention to individuals and/or groups of students.
  • Advise and monitor all identified College Bound Scholarship students.
  • Promote and assist families with FAFSA applications.
  • Develop and maintain community resources for student referral.
  • Utilize data to identify implement and evaluate student (individual or group) practices that might reduce impediments to student learning and enhance student success
  • Adhere to legal and ethical standards and principles of the school counseling profession and educational systems follow district and state policies and procedures.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders such as parents and guardians teachers administrators and community leaders to create learning opportunities that promote educational equity and success.
  • Represent and advocate for Deer Park School District and its students on college committees and in the larger K12 community.
  • Consistently utilize a collaborative approach to work with others solve problems and resolve conflict.
  • Participate in self-improvement and professional development activities in the field of expertise and demonstrate current knowledge and skills.
  • Develop strategies and increase awareness to foster and support cultural diversity and non-discrimination.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated skills in human relations leadership and conflict management.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of teaching techniques that meet the diverse needs of students.
  • Demonstrated skill in the use of technology to enhance student learning preferred.
  • Demonstrated classroom management skills and ability to differentiate instruction.
  • Evidence of ability to develop positive and collaborative relationships with students staff parents and the public.
  • Aware of current educational developments and applications
  • Demonstrated appreciation of and sensitivity to youth and adults of varying socioeconomic cultural and ethnic backgrounds different learning styles and various disabilities
  • Willingness interest and commitment to participate in professional collaboration and student supervision.
  • Commitment and adherence to confidentiality and other professional standards

  • Skills:Keyboarding and use of computers for report writing and computer analysis of data. Collaborative meeting facilitation and staff training in the areas of school counseling.

  • Knowledge:Understanding of the multi-facet nature of school counseling and familiarity with the strategies guidelines professional responsibilities and laws associated with the field.

  • Abilities:Able to work both collaboratively on teams and independently in the day-to-day execution of the duties and tasks of a school counselor. Must be able to work quickly and efficiently with attention to detail and timelines. Must be able to communicate clearly and professionally with students parents and staff. Must be able to meet the challenge of mediating diverse ideas opinions and needs between various stakeholders.

Job Requirements and Minimum Qualifications:

  • Masters degree with academic preparation appropriate to a counseling assignment
  • Washington ESA in counseling required.
  • Demonstrated ability in individual and group counseling.
  • Demonstrated skill and experience working with multi-ethnic and multicultural populations.
  • Three years of successful counseling experience preferred.
  • Excellent verbal and written skills

Salary Range: $61970 - $101895 per year depending on experience and degree.

7.5 hours per day Monday - Friday. September 20th - January

Benefits:Employees anticipated to work more than 630 hours per year will be eligible for Benefits through the School Employees Benefits Board (SEBB) Standard benefits include Medical Dental Vision Life Insurance and Long-Term Disability.

Benefits:Positions anticipated to work 70 hours or more per month for at least 5 months over a 12-month period are eligible for Retirement through the State Department of Retirement Services. position is evaluated by the building principal.
