The Deputy Director of Housing has operational responsibility to manage and direct the various activities of the Housing and Community Development Division. The position reports the Director of Housing & Community Development and will have extensive interaction and a high level of visibility with the Mayor Council and numerous community leaders while aggressively pursuing City goals related to housing. As the Citys second housing executive and content expert the successful candidate will have solid technical expertise in the areas of low-to-moderate and market-rate housing programs.

What you will typically be responsible for:
  • Planning organizing and overseeing comprehensive housing and community development programs including scheduling budgeting and performance tracking.
  • Directing and coordinating a wide range of housing developments projects and services ensuring alignment with departmental goals and community needs.
  • Developing and implementing division goals policies procedures and work standards including systems for program evaluation and continuous improvement.
  • Preparing and managing the divisions budget reports and proposals; provide strategic recommendations to senior leadership City Council and commissions.
  • Collaborating with internal departments external agencies contractors and community stakeholders to coordinate initiatives and ensure effective service delivery.
  • Representing the City in public forums; engage with elected officials community groups and other stakeholders to communicate plans address concerns and respond to emerging issues.

Minimum Requirements for Application

The following qualifications are guidelines as the appointing authority has broad discretion in filling positions in this classification.

Education:
A bachelors degree from an accredited college or university with major coursework in urban or city planning real estate business or public administration or a closely related field.

Experience:
Eight (8) years of experience in housing and/or development five (5) years of which must be in a managerial role.

Individuals who are appointed to this position will be required to maintain a valid California Drivers License throughout the tenure of employment OR demonstrate the ability to travel to various locations in a timely manner as required in the performance of duties.

Please note: Salary is negotiable within the defined range depending on qualifications.

  • Health: The City of Oakland pays the full cost of employee and eligible dependent coverage at the Kaiser rate. Other plans include Anthem Blue Shield United Health Care and other HMO and PPO plans.
  • Dental: Delta Dental full premium for employees and eligible dependents
  • Vision: VSP full premium for employees and eligible dependents
  • Sick leave: Employees accrue 12 days peryear.
  • Deferred Compensation: 457(b) pre-tax plan and an after-tax ROTH 401(k)plan
  • Other benefits include a Flexible Spending Account Wellness Program Employee Assistance Program Tuition Reimbursement Life Insurance up to $200k & Employee Training.

Disaster Service Workers
