TITLE

Technical Production Specialist

JOB SUMMARY

The Technical Production Specialist provides essential production support for the Division of Music Working in a complementary role to the Performance Hall Manager. This position is responsible for leading the design and implementation of key technical elements for productions. The role requires demonstrated expertise in theatrical lighting with proficient capabilities in sound video and the recording/archiving of performances. This role is critical for ensuring high-quality professional-level performance experiences and requires extensive hands-on technical work. Work is performed under the dual supervision of the Manager of Performance Facilities and the Director of the School of the Arts and Design and involves considerable collaboration with faculty staff and students.

ORGANIZATIONAL RELATIONSHIPS

Reports to: Manager Performance Facilities and Director School of the Arts and Design

Supervises: Student Assistants

ESSENTIAL DUTIES - May include but not limited to the following:

Assists the Performance Hall Manager with daily venue operations maintenance and performance logistics.

Leads the design implementation and operation of theatrical lighting systems for all musical theatre concert and other live events.

Takes a leading role as needed in technical direction basic scenic construction painting and load-in for musical theatre productions (approx. two per year).

Assists in operating audio systems for rehearsals concerts and events including microphone setup mixing and reinforcement.

Supports digital production efforts including professional audio/video recording livestreaming and post-production editing for archival and promotional purposes.

Records performances in multiple venues including Margo Jones Performance Hall the Multipurpose Classroom Laboratory building (MCL) and Little Chapel in the Woods.

Consults with the Performance Hall Manager faculty and guest artists on technical and artistic matters to realize their creative vision.

Provides hands-on training and mentorship to student assistants in lighting sound and general stagecraft.

ADDITIONAL DUTIES

Performs other duties as requested.

Performs other related duties as assigned including support for special initiatives outreach and recruitment events.

Maintains inventory and ensures proper care of all technical equipment.

EDUCATION

Bachelors degree in technical theater theatrical design music event production music technology digital media or a related field required. Masters degree preferred.

EXPERIENCE

A minimum of two years of professional experience in live event production with demonstrated expertise in lighting design and implementation for music theatre or dance.

Experience serving as a technical director or assistant technical director for productions is highly desirable.

Demonstrated proficiency in live sound reinforcement audio/video recording video projection and production support.

Experience working with student crews in a training or mentorship capacity is preferred.

Experience in a performing arts or higher education environment is highly preferred.

Experience as a musician or working closely with musicians is highly preferred.

REQUIREMENT

Regular and reliable attendance at the University during regular scheduled days and work hours is an essential function of this position.

All employees share the responsibility of maintaining information security and privacy requirements within the university by adhering to Federal and State regulations and TWU Policies & Procedures.

Valid Texas drivers license and an acceptable driving record as required for university Drivers Authorization.

Evening and weekend availability is required to support rehearsals performances and events.

Ability to lift push or pull objects up to 50 lbs.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES - The following are essential:

Advanced knowledge in operating and troubleshooting theatrical lighting systems including conventional and LED fixtures and programming on consoles (e.g. ETC Eos/Ion family).

Skill with live audio mixing consoles (digital and analog) and sound reinforcement techniques.

Knowledge of video and audio recording equipment livestreaming platforms and editing software (e.g. Adobe Premiere QLab Final Cut Pro Pro Tools Logic).

Knowledge of basic stagecraft and scenic workshop practices.

Strong organizational skills and attention to detail with the ability to manage technical aspects of multiple productions simultaneously.

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively and effectively with a diverse group of students faculty staff and guest artists.

Knowledge of the unique technical needs of musicians and musical performances within an academic environment.

Ability to supervise train and mentor student workers in technical roles.
