Responsibilities
Examines plans and specifications of all new construction alterations and repair of buildings for compliance with the City of Dayton Zoning Code. Assists residential customers and small businesses in zoning plan review including all permits for commercial and residential fences and signs accessory structures home daycares decks and other similar projects. Makes final determinations regarding compliance with standards and ordinances. Assists applicants in preparing cases to be presented to the Dayton Board of Zoning Appeals. Fosters development and creates desirable outcomes for the city by implementing planning principals and applying the Zoning Code judiciously during plan review. Ensures protection and promotion of the Citys tree canopy water resources and historic preservation. Supports the Citys vision for a multi-modal and pedestrian-friendly transportation system and high-quality built environment. Able to assist with the creation of site plans problem-solving through design challenges and employing visual techniques to communicate with applicants is necessary to perform well in this role. May also improve Zoning FAQs and other webpage content create video content to assist customers create ESRI web maps support enforcement work conduct research participate in Zoning code updates and assist with other projects as assigned by the Zoning Administrator. Works independently or as a team member with a wide variety of neighborhood and community groups City staff and agencies. Must have a working knowledge of Geographic Information Systems; use of ESRI products is desired.
Minimum Qualifications
Must meet one of the following:
- Bachelors degree from a college approved by the Planning Accreditation Board (PAB); OR
- Bachelors degree in Planning Architecture Civil Engineering Geography Historic Preservation or a closely related field AND one year of professional experience with a planning zoning development preservation architectural or engineering agency or firm.
Degree must be from a college or university that is accredited by the U.S. Department of Education through the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools Higher Learning Commission or equivalent region.
License Requirements
Must possess a valid drivers license at time of appointment and maintain thereafter as a term and condition of continued employment.

Background Check
A background investigation and evidence of Employment Authorization and Identity is required prior to candidates must pass any level of background investigation applicable to the position including current city employees seeking transfer promotion demotion etc. into a classified position.
Medical Examination & Drug and Nicotine Testing
Final appointment is contingent upon the applicant passing a job-related medical examination including drug screen. Applicants offered employment with the City will be required to pass a nicotine screening. Newly hired employees must remain tobacco and nicotine free as a condition of continued employment. The Tobacco and Nicotine Free Hiring Policy does not apply to current City employees.
