Job Description

Candidate must be fluent in Spanish and Portugese.

Job Summary

Technical work providing language proficiency testing services for students enrolled in the Duval County Public School system and foreign language translating services for the district office schools staff members students and parents as needed. Work requires fluency in English and a foreign language.

Essential Functions

1. Receives and screens Home Language Survey Forms to ensure compliance with requirements verify information and update database.

2. Researches ESE eligibility and previous testing.

3. Prepares testing schedules for schools.

4. Organizes summer testing for first time students in the district. May coordinate with social service organizations to arrange testing for refugees and immigrants.

5. Administers the Language Assessment Scale to prospective English for Speakers of Other Languages students. Scores and evaluates testing results.

6. Conducts evaluations of students including annuals. Prepares reports of testing and provides information and guidance to schools and administrators.

7. Establishes maintains enters and updates records files and testing information as required. Conducts an annual inventory of student records.

8. Responds to questions and inquiries from parents and teachers regarding language testing.

9. Provides in-service training for new school-based ESOL contacts and/or teachers.

10. Provides document translation and oral translation services as needed.

11. Performs related duties as required.

Probation: 6 months

Open Requirements: Ability to read write and speak English and the ability to read write and speak at least one foreign language fluently. Must pass foreign language fluency test administered by qualified School Board personnel prior to appointment.

Licensing/Certification/Registration: A valid Florida drivers license is required prior to appointment and must be maintained during employment in this class. May be required to furnish a personal auto for which mileage reimbursement will be paid.

Knowledge Skill & Abilities:

  • Knowledge of English and a foreign language
  • Knowledge of State and County policies and regulations regarding the health safety and welfare of students as provided through in-service training
  • Knowledge of requirements and procedures for testing students who speak a foreign language
  • Strong oral written and interpersonal communication skills
  • Basic word processing spreadsheet and database software skills
  • Basic addition subtraction multiplication and division mathematical skills
  • Ability to speak English fluently
  • Ability to speak a foreign language fluently
  • Ability to administer and score language proficiency tests for English for Speakers of Other Languages students
  • Ability to maintain records and prepare reports
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students parents and others
  • Ability to assist parents teachers administrators and students in oral and written communications in the appropriate home language
  • Ability to operate personal computer to enter data and compose correspondence and reports
  • Ability to read understand and apply job-related instructions policies procedures and information
