The Electrical Engineering Specialist is a 2.9.2 appointment in terms of the MHS Act and is responsible for overseeing plant electrical maintenance ensuring safe reliable operations through expert asset management and cross-functional coordination.
Key tasks of the role are:
- Work is performed to Zero Harm principles to prevent injury to persons and damage to machinery and equipment.
- Work area to be maintained to the required housekeeping (5 S) standards.
- This role is responsible for providing expert specialised engineering services (eg: advanced diagnostics fault finding of critical equipment updating of drawings reviewing and updating asset tactics review of energy utilisation and quality of energy supply).
- All equipment and facilities to comply with required Valterra Platinum specifications and standards for safe operation.
- All safety devices and facilities are operational and correctly used.
- Electrical systems machinery and equipment are maintained and repaired to ensure optimum plant availability and reliability.
- Safe and effective operation and maintenance (based on tactics) on all LV and MV Electrical systems machinery and equipment.
- Engage in and drive continuous improvements in maintenance tactics and materials deployed all focused on improving equipment availability.
- Ensure site compliance with electrical integrity strategy and operational procedures.
- Support drafting and revising electrical site operational procedures.
- Represent operations at Factory Acceptance Tests for new and re-conditioned electrical equipment
- Actively participate in the off-site and onsite stripping of failed electrical equipment
- Provide managerial support to electrical foreman and site electrical contractors
- Engage in a Root Cause Analysis (RCA) process on major electrical equipment failures or repeat failures and track identified corrective actions through to completed implementation and sign off.
- Enforce ETAP maintenance to Valterra Platinum requirements and liaise with ETAP support desk during protection trips and outages.
- Advanced programming operation and troubleshooting on protection relays and switchgear in accordance with ETAP support desk recommendations.
- Advanced troubleshooting and performing of fault-finding tests on LV and MV Electrical systems machinery and equipment.
- Adhere to all legal requirements as per the Mines Health and safety Act 29 of 1996 and the Minerals act and Regulations of 1991.
- Report any contraventions of the Minerals Act MHSA Regulations codes of practice instructions permissions exemptions.
- Stop all unsafe activities practices and machinery.
- Report any risk associated with non-compliance or inability to comply with standards specifications procedures and documents (Single Line Diagrams Protection Setting Tables and legal documents) relating to the discipline.
- Assist with identification of mitigating measures to control risks and resolve emerging safety issues.
- Provide inputs and support into Accident and incident analyses
- Maintain sound and professional relationships with consultants internal departments & project teams service providers and suppliers.
- To assist with the identification of specialist tools and facilities to enable efficient maintenance repairs and fault finding.
- Must conduct MV refresher assessments for MV electricians.
- Assist and advise the engineer on critical spares needs and gaps.
- Personally perform all specialised tasks as per task matrix.
- Actively pursue with the intention to obtain specialised knowledge from Original Equipment Manufacturers and external specialists on the maintenance and testing of complex systems with the intention to develop and execute in-house procedures.
This role is at a Band 6 Level reporting to the Section Engineering Manager.
Qualifications :
- Grade 12
- N3 Electrical Trade qualification
- Medium Voltage Certificate
- Forman Certificate will be advantageous
Experience:
- 10 years post trade qualification
- 2 years experience in a leadership role (Engineering Foreman/Specialist)
- Extensive experience in the maintenance of Electrical Distribution Equipment and Drive Systems: Transformers GMDs MV Switchgear and Protection Systems LV Switchgear & MCCs AC & DC Motors and Variable Speed Drives (ACS 800/1000)
- Basic computer literacy
- English literate
- Valid driving license
