Role Description
As a Senior Commercial Attorney SME in our Commercial Contracting team you will collaborate with inhouse legal and business teams across diverse clients. Your role will involve drafting and negotiating complex commercial agreements streamlining contracting processes and applying your legal expertise to drive practical outcomes. You will also support and mentor junior and midlevel colleagues fostering knowledge sharing and enhancing delivery standards.
Role Responsibilities
- Draft review and negotiate a broad range of commercial contractsincluding master services agreements SaaS and licensing agreements NDAs procurement and partnership contractsensuring alignment with client playbooks and operational needs.
- Lead endtoend matters by establishing project plans tracking budgets and deliverables and providing regular status updates to client stakeholders and internal teams.
- Identify contractual and processrelated risks escalate material issues promptly and collaborate with inhouse legal teams or external counsel to develop riskmitigation strategies.
- Drive contract lifecycle management activities such as initiating renewals or amendments applying termination procedures and coordinating with procurement or IT functions to ensure seamless execution of deliverables for clients.
- Develop and enhance internal playbooks standard templates and guidance notes; document best practices and lessons learned to improve consistency and operational efficiency across multiple client engagements.
- Ensure alignment of deliverables with Cognia internal stakeholders by executing work in accordance with the applicable statement of work (SOW) and meeting internal quality and service standards.
- Champion the use of legal technologiessuch as document automation tools and AIenabled review platformsby helping to configure test and roll out new solutions in collaboration with IT and processimprovement teams.
- Monitor key performance indicators (e.g. utilisation turnaround times) and contribute to periodic client reporting postengagement debriefs and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Stay current on relevant regulatory changes market developments and sectoral trendssynthesising findings into concise updates or playbook revisions to keep client teams ahead of emerging challenges.
- Support the development of junior attorneys midlevel associates secondees and paralegals by providing informal mentoring sharing knowledge and reviewing work for consistency accuracy and alignment with client expectations.
Requirements- Law degree from a top South African or UK/ EU based tertiary institution
- Qualified attorney with a minimum of 10 years postqualification experience (PQE) in commercial contracting.
- Proven ability to deliver highcomplexity legal services including drafting reviewing and negotiating complex contracts.
- Demonstrated capability in delivering effective subjectmatter and skills training to individuals and groups.
- Experience in drafting and reviewing mid to highcomplexity contracts.
- Familiarity with artificial intelligence applications in legal contexts.
- Competence in legal research.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to mentor and support team members.
- Adaptability and a proactive approach to problemsolving.
- Commitment to continuous learning and professional development.
