Job Description

Full-Time and Permanent; 7.5 Hours/Day; 252 Days/Year; 12 Months/Year; Grade L

DEFINITION

An employee assigned to a position in this class is responsible for serving as a building principal of a centralized alternative or specialized school and providing leadership for all school/program components.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE CLASS (May not include all duties performed by each position in the class).

Serves as Principal of an NPS special education or alternative school program.

Communicates and coordinates with other city or school system agencies regarding student well being.

Participates in Child Study Screening IEPs tri-annuals etc. and directs preparation of required reports and conferences.

Studies the educational needs of the community served by the school and develops and adopts educational programs approved by the School Board to meet particular needs of the community served.

Consults with and coordinates the services of instructional support personnel to supervise the provision of effective assistance to classroom teachers.

Supervises and participates in the preparation of a variety of reports forms and surveys and in the maintenance of inventory and other records.

Prepares the school budget and administers it once approved. Two school budgets are completed annually.

Selects evaluates and supervises the utilization of instructional texts multimedia supplies and equipment and other instructional or reference materials.

Performs division wide administrative duties as required or assigned.

Supervises the planning developing implementation and evaluation of instructional programs and materials.

Provides continuing evaluation of faculty and support staff and provides counsel on instructional and administrative matters.

Develops and implements staff development and training programs.

Reports to the appropriate resources regarding the schools needs with respect to personnel curriculum equipment and supplies.

Interviews prospective employees and makes recommendations regarding their employment.

Supervises and actively participates in a variety of student activities.

Directs the provision of appropriate special instructional programs.

Develops or oversees development of a master schedule or coordinates off-site activities to implement goals of the educational program or center to which assigned with optimum use of facilities and staff.

Evaluates faculty and support staff through observation and conferences.

Develops and executes in service training programs.

Enforces standards of discipline health safety and general welfare of both students and staff.

Maintains continuing communication and liaison with parents parent groups business civic and community sources to achieve understanding and support for center programs and goals.

Directs oversees or performs a variety of administrative responsibilities including supervision of student transportation and safety pupil accounting maintenance of buildings and facilities cafeteria operations and after hours use of facilities.

Prepares a variety of reports forms and surveys.

Participates in personnel selections and assignments.

Interprets School Board policies to students staff and the community.

Oversees the selection evaluation and utilization of computer technology multimedia equipment and supplies and other instructional or reference materials including activities related to the professional library.

Supervises and actively participates in student counseling scheduling and schedule adjustments.

Collaborates with professional staff and the administrators of other schools in program assessment and evaluations teaching techniques curriculum design and implementation scheduling student control interpersonal relationships and policy matters.

Prepares center/program budget and supervises the maintenance of expenditure and related financial and budgetary controls.

Directs the assignment of students to ensure appropriateness of instructional program to meet individual needs.

Performs other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES

Broad knowledge of principles and practices of modern public education in general and of the center or program to which assigned and an ability to apply them to the needs of the school.

Broad knowledge of current curriculum and instructional practices and public school administration and organization.

Comprehensive knowledge of school law and legal issues related to assignment.

Ability to plan organize and coordinate instruction support services student activities and school-community relations programs including significant business and governmental relations for some positions.

Ability to plan and supervise and evaluate the work of professional and support staff.

Ability to develop effective working relationships with students staff the business community and the general public.

Ability to utilize a variety of computer applications and technology.

Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both orally and in writing.

MINIMUM EDUCATION EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING REQUIREMENTS

Completion of college with a masters degree in school administration plus extensive progressively more responsible experience in middle school or high school teaching and as an assistant principal coordinator or director.

LICENSE

Postgraduate Professional License with one or more center/program related teaching endorsements and principal endorsement appropriate to assignment.

PHYSICAL ATTRIBUTES

Work requires normal physical attributes required for walking standing sitting operating office equipment communication equipment lifting moving carrying light equipment supplies etc.

HAZARDS

Most of the time work involves only exposure to normal everyday risks however some activities may involve working with students with disabilities that requires knowledge of intervention and restraint techniques.

UNUSUAL DEMANDS

Include activities in schools in the community and require one to have or arrange for own transportation.

Work is subject to deadlines and inherent in tailoring and delivering programs to meet the needs of many divergent groups.

Extensive night and weekend activities.

Work is located in schools and is subject to normal interruptions.

Some activities involve contact with irate parents and students.
