Job Description

Concordia University is a Lutheran higher education community committed to helping students develop in mind body and spirit for service to Christ in the Church and in the world.

Position Summary

The Director leads the Office of Research & Sponsored Programs in providing cradle-to-grave grant services and research development services to Concordia University personnel. This position reports to the Chief Academic Officer. This is a full-time 12-month position that is located on the Mequon Wisconsin campus and involves limited travel to the Concordia University Ann Arbor campus and partner institutions.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

Assumes responsibility for all functions of the ORSP providing support and research administration services through the life cycle of sponsored projects. The Director:

  • Scaffolds and grows university-wide research development at all levels
  • Develops pertinent policies and procedures and oversees their implementation
  • Works collaboratively with Chief Academic Officer Office of Advancement Office of the President and other departments to envision and execute institution-wide goals for research and grants
  • Develops and maintains professional development series for relevant stakeholders such as Future Principal Investigators (FPIs) current Principal Investigators (PIs) and other grant personnel faculty students and staff
  • Trains faculty students and staff in research compliance and ensures university compliance with all federal state and university regulations and policies
  • Serves as institutional AOR and maintains federal accounts
  • Holds biweekly research development sessions with FPIs
  • Oversees internal grants program and indirect funds management in collaboration with the Faculty Scholarship Committee
  • Supports faculty in preparation of research grant proposals and submits proposals to appropriate funders (generally federal but sometimes state or private funders)
  • Oversees annual conference planning (Wisconsin Interdisciplinary Research Symposium or other)
  • Serves on Academic and Administrative Councils representing Office at the institutional level
  • Maintains active research agenda for ORSP team
  • Contributes to institutional strategic planning and other large-scale long-term projects in collaboration with Office of Advancement and other departments
  • Maintains website monthly newsletter and blog posts
  • Supervises a Post-Award Manager an IRB Administrator and various contractors as appropriate
  • Liaises with Deans and Department Chairs to support each area of scholarly interest
  • Performs other duties as assigned

  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively with people at all levels
  • Ability to provide quality customer service in an efficient and effective manner
  • Ability to work through complex problems independently with incomplete information by utilizing analytical and critical thinking skills and employing the correct external resources
  • Ability to work effectively when circumstances call for a Just-in-time submission
  • Ability to independently manage multiple concurrent projects and still meet strict deadlines. Effectively and efficiently uses time and resources allocated to complete tasks. Effectively prioritizes tasks at hand to meet expectations
  • Knowledge of federal regulations such as 2CFR200 the Uniform Grant Guidance
  • Supportive of the mission and values of Concordia University Wisconsin/Ann Arbor and the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod (LCMS)

Education & Experience

  • Masters degree and track record of grants and scholarly work
  • At least three years of experience in research administration in a higher education/research environment
