This position requires extensive knowledge on drug usage and drug trends.
The Los Angeles County (County) Department of Health Services (DHS) Office ofDiversion and Reentry (ODR) Overdose Education and Naloxone Distribution(OEND) program will expand access to naloxone across the County. The aim of theOEND program is to provide training and naloxone to people who use Countyservices and to those who are likely to be present at the scene of an overdose. Because of the high mortality rates among people leaving incarceration the first target population will be the reentry population leaving LAC jails or in their communities. Naloxone is an opioid antagonist which is used to reverse the effects of an opioidoverdose.
This is a full-time benefitted position (40 hours per week).
Employment is provided by Heluna Health.
The pay rate for this position is $33.13 per hour
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Thoroughly learn and be prepared to fully and independently deliver trainings as assigned by Director of Training and Education
- Provide overdose prevention and response trainings to those at risk of opioid overdose.
- Provide overdose prevention and response trainings to law enforcement service providers and agencies working with target populations and reentry populations.
- Provide trainings for partner providers on subjects including but not limited to: Harm Reduction Principles and Practice Safer Drug Use Supplies and Drug Trends both in person and virtually.
- Ensure all trainings are delivered with utmost professionalism either in-person or if delivered virtually
- Build and maintain trusting open and professional relationships with participants community organizations governmental authorities or funders
- Work with program director to develop or revise training materials.
- Answer post trainings questions in full and notify supervisor of follow up actions or materials needed for training group that was in attendance
- Notify supervisor of any issues or concerns that occurred in a training session
- Deliver naloxone harm reduction materials or safer use supplies to contracted providers on day of training as needed
- Attend required programmatic meetings as requested by Director of Training and Education
- Complete all necessary and required documentation which includes Naloxone tracking tool and trainings provided and guests in attendance.
- Compile and report summary program data on regular intervals as directed by Supervisor.
- Report any relevant feedback about trainings that will keep the trainings as useful and up-to-date as possible.
- Maintain participant confidentiality and privacy by protecting participant health information.
- Establish and maintain non-judgmental trusting and open relationships with participants and service providers.
- Assist participants families and significant others in understanding risk of opioid overdose risk prevention and response.
- Communicate information about health and social service systems and harm reduction practices as well as Naloxone access.
- Build trusting relationships and collaborate with other team members.
- In both formal and informal settings educate and inform other health and social service professionals about strengths and needs as well as cultural worldviews experiences and perspectives of the communities impacted by opioid overdose.
- Learn about CHPLAs other program offerings and provide referrals as needed to our other services.
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

JOB QUALIFICATIONS
- Preferred 1 year experience providing harm reduction trainings.
- Familiarity with harm reduction theory practice and history.
- Skilled presenter/trainer who can present materials to a wide audience.
- Strong public speaking skills.
- Detail oriented.
- Ability to think critically and answer questions as they arise and dispel misinformation.
- Bilingual in Spanish is highly preferred.
- Lived experience preferred in one or more of the communities of focus: people experiencing homelessness people coming out of incarceration people who use drugs.
- Member of the community close affiliation or shared life experience with the community being served.
- Ability to work appropriately and effectively within a variety of communities with varying populations.
- Potential or demonstrated community leadership.
- Experience working with medically and socially complex individuals.
Certificates/Licenses/Clearances
- Background check required
- A valid California drivers license proof of vehicle insurance and reliable transportation or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation when needed to carry out job-related essential functions
- Must be at least 21 years of age and will be required to enroll in the DMV Pull Notice program
- Existing relationships and trust within communities of focus.
- Familiarity working with or navigating within the health and social services system preferably as a result of lived experience.
- Ability to build and maintain trusting relationships with community stakeholders and health and social service providers.
- Ability to work independently in a constantly changing environment.
- Personal strength resilience and stability to allow the CHW with support of supervisor and work team to face very challenging situations and avoid re-traumatization and vicarious trauma.
