The Department of Physics and Biophysics within the College of Arts and Sciences of the University of San Diego offers B.A. and B.S. degrees in Physics and in Biophysics. We are proud of the personalized student mentoring small class sizes and independent research opportunities our faculty provide. Our faculty normally teach about 3 courses per semester and have opportunities to teach across the undergraduate curriculum. Our faculty involve undergraduates at every level of their research programs. Current faculty conduct research in astronomy atomic physics plasma physics computational astrophysics astroparticle physics soft condensed matter and biophysics.

The Department of Physics and Biophysics at the University of San Diego a primarily undergraduate institution committed to providing a liberal arts education invites applications for a tenure-track assistant professor to start in Fall 2026. Candidates should have research interests in quantum science that involves the use of computational and/or numerical methods.
The Department of Physics and Biophysics seeks applicants who can demonstrate that they will take a student-centered approach to teaching undergraduates across our curriculum from lower-division courses for non-majors to advanced upper-division courses. We encourage applications from those who have an interest in and can demonstrate prior success in developing engaging lower-division physics or astronomy courses for majors outside of the sciences. Qualified candidates will be able to make use of existing equipment for a lower division astronomy course and outreach events (telescopes and a planetarium). Qualified candidates will also describe clear plans to establish a productive undergraduate-driven research program in an area related to atomic physics or fundamental quantum mechanics. Such plans must describe how undergraduate students will be provided with authentic research experience. Participation in department and university service is expected and qualified candidates will have experience serving on university committees participating in recruitment and outreach events serving as an academic advisor and other related activities. A demonstrated ability to perform public physics and astronomy demonstrations is highly valued.

Degree Verification Requirement: Persons offered employment in this position will be required to provide official education transcripts for degree verification purposes.
Candidates will hold a terminal degree preferably a PhD in Physics. Qualified candidates will have full-time university-level teaching experience beyond the teaching assistant level. Candidates will also have demonstrated a commitment to teaching and research mentoring undergraduates and university service.

The salary range provided in this posting reflects what we reasonably expect to pay for this position. Actual compensation offered or earned is dependent on experience education and other factors including departmental budget.
