Description

Methodist University is seeking to hire an experienced creative forward-thinking student-focused Director of Simulation Education to oversee simulation learning content and contribute to clinical skills education for its new School of Medicine in Fayetteville NC. The Methodist University Cape Fear Valley Health School of Medicine is a LCME candidate program with an anticipated start date of Summer 2026 for its charter class. Our mission is to prepare our graduates to be socially accountable community-engaged evidence-based compassionate equity-focused physician leaders who will contribute to mitigating health disparities and improving health outcomes in southeastern NC or wherever they may practice. The Director of Simulation Education is part of the Office of Academic Affairs and reports directly to the Assistant Dean for Clinical Skills and Simulation. The Director will collaborate with the Assistant Dean for Clinical Skills and Simulation Foundational Sciences faculty and the Assistant Dean for Clinical Education to develop a longitudinal integrated simulation curriculum. The Director will work with an interprofessional team across departments to facilitate learning events. This position requires a deep understanding of simulation best practices undergraduate medical education curriculum delivery and the ability to work collaboratively in a team.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Develop a longitudinal simulation curriculum:

  • Collaborate with Foundational Science faculty and the Assistant Dean for Clinical Skills and Simulation to integrate simulation experiences into the Foundation Phase (MS1 & MS2). Work with course directors to develop syllabi and curriculum schedule encounters assign educators evaluate outcomes and implement a continuous quality assessment and improvement system for simulation in medical education.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Dean for Clinical Education and the Assistant Dean for Clinical Skills and Simulation to integrate simulation into the Cornerstone (MS3) and Capstone (MS4) phases of the educational program.
  • Collaborate with the simulation team at Cape Fear Valley Simulation Center to optimize operations for all stakeholders.
  • Provide subject content expertise on designing high-quality simulation educational content.
  • Promote best practices in simulation education.
  • Contribute expertise to equipment purchasing and maintenance decisions for simulation and clinical skills.

2. Participate in related educational activities:

  • Serve as faculty for Clinical Skills learning events such as:
  • Standardized patient encounters
  • Physical exam teaching
  • Documentation workshops
  • Skills workshops
  • Interprofessional educational events
  • Serve as a faculty facilitator for small group Clinical Case workshops.
  • Review and evaluate student performance related to clinical skills and simulation including Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs).

3. Assessment and Evaluation:

  • Collaborate with MCFV assessment specialists to develop and administer assessment tools to measure learning outcomes and program effectiveness.
  • Collaborate with the simulation team at Cape Fear Valley to develop and implement cross-departmental processes assessments and evaluation tools.

4. Educational Technology Integration:

  • Implement technology into instructional design including the use of:
  • High-fidelity and low-fidelity simulators
  • Task trainers
  • Virtual reality augmented reality and artificial intelligence
  • Identify and integrate appropriate educational technologies to enhance the learning experience.
  • Proactively research emerging technologies to meet evolving teaching and learning demands.

5. Faculty Development and Institutional Support:

  • Engage in professional development activities both internally and externally to facilitate advancement in knowledge and skills.
  • Engage in scholarly activity to promote best practices and continual process improvement in simulation education.
  • Collaborate with the Assistant Dean for Clinical Skills and Simulation to train faculty in simulation methodology facilitating and debriefing.
  • Collaborate with the Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs & Faculty Development to provide professional education to MCFV faculty.
  • Collaborate with the Associate Dean for Research to provide support for simulation research and quality improvement projects.
  • Assist the simulation team with achieving and maintaining accreditation of the Cape Fear Valley Simulation Center through the Society for Simulation in Healthcare.

Qualifications

  • Candidates with the following qualifications are encouraged to apply: MD or DO Advanced Practice Provider professionals with terminal degree in health sciences.
  • Fellowship or experience in developing and administering a simulation curriculum in medical education is required.
  • Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of simulation instructional design principles adult learning theories and best practices in healthcare simulation.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced dynamic environment.
  • Excellent communication skills with a focus on building strong partnerships with faculty content experts and university leaders to ensure alignment of learning content with program goals.
