Position Summary
TECHNICAL DIRECTOR
JOBDESCRIPTION
The Technical Direction/ Instructor at Guilford College is responsible for all technical elements related to shows produced for the Theatre Studies department and reports to the department chair. TheTDbegins and ends the academic year packing and unpacking all theatre department equipment in the Sternberger Auditorium for summer programming. During the academic year theTDmanages the production calendar including scheduling all work calls. TheTDalso manages work-study and practicum students working in shops on productions or theatre improvements. TheTDsupervises practicum students in the areas of Electrics Props and Sound Engineering and provides Stage Management students with supplies and support in setting up rehearsal spaces and props tables. TheTDresponds to rehearsal notes and provides rehearsal scenery as needed.
TheTDcontracts designers and manages the installation of Lighting Sound as well as all expendables related to design decisions. TheTDengineers and constructs the scenery and props for all Guilford College productions. TheTDalso teaches one section of THEA 111 every semester.
Responsibilities:
1. Manage Production Calendar with Load-in Strike Rehearsal and Performance dates
2. Manages departmental operating budget for show expenses
3. Supervise Sound Lighting and Carpentry practicum students.
4. Supervise and schedule Sound Lighting and Carpentry work-study students.
5. Teach THEA 111 Backstage Production.
6. Schedule and run production meetings for department productions.
7. Contract outside Designers for department productions.
8. Supervise installation of lighting plot according to designers specifications with or without student electricians.
9. Read and respond to rehearsal notes provide rehearsal scenery and assist in the acquisition and/or construction of set props.
10. Provide ground plans and supplies to stage management students for the taping of the floor.
11. Supervise the sound system installation according to the designers specifications.
12. Plan and fabricate sets for department productions.
13. Manage lighting sound and carpentry expendables.
14. Manage the budget for all department productions.
15. Supervise all work calls for department productions.
16. Supervise all Board operators of their jobs
17. Assist in student stage managers running of a show.
18. Ensure that Sternberger is a safe environment on the first day of tech.
19. Any of the work above not completed by the first TECH must be discussed with their supervisor prior to the first day of TECH.
20. Maintain the Department spaces (Dana Gym Shop Studios lobby etc)
21. Pack up Sternberger at final strike.
