Outdoor Discovery Programs is hiring kayak instructors. We have an in-depth training program for enthusiasts who would like to develop their skills and help others learn. Join an inclusive and welcoming team and spend your summer outdoors teaching the sport you love.
Position Purpose: Inspire people to engage in new outdoor activities or enjoy the sports they already love. Promote increase participation by providing exemplary service and instruction. Welcome and retain new customers as they experience outside of the retail environment.
The anticipated base pay range for this Kayak Instructor position is between $16.00 to $21.69 hourly or annually. The actual salary will be based on various factors such as a candidates experience qualifications skills and competencies proficiency for the role.
Operating Season:
May through end of October
Training available prior to first shift
Mid-season training in mid-July
Responsibilities:
Demonstrates ability to create a safe and inclusive environment for all
Understand and consistently perform all responsibilities associated with our safety protocols and program procedures
Confirms all equipment used is in appropriate working condition
Report any unsafe acts conditions and equipment to the appropriate person
Always conducts self with the highest ethical and moral standards
Always represents the teaching profession at its highest level
Lives our company core values of Outdoor Heritage Service Respect Integrity Perseverance Safe and Healthy Living
Communicates professionally
Participates in pre-course conversations and debrief
Provide professional and timely feedback to peers as necessary
Knowledgeable of relevant equipment and apparel and can effectively share information with customers
Participates in promotional events when equipment expertise is needed
Is knowledgeable about local ODP programs
Possess the ability to teach in a relaxed clear and confident manner to a variety of participants
Effectively deliver all course components in the allotted time
Perform daily administrative duties associated with instructing classes
Other duties as assigned/offered
Health and Safety Requirement: Every employee is responsible for contributing to a safe and healthy workplace. Employees are expected to be active participants in health and safety by following all safety policies and procedures reporting unsafe conditions or at-risk behaviors to leadership and conducting work in a safe manner. Those in a leadership role are also expected to model safe behaviors evaluate risk and ensure that risks are reduced to acceptable levels.
This position has been identified as a safety-sensitive position. A safety-sensitive position is one in which an impaired worker constitutes a serious and direct threat to workplace health and safety. Employees in this position must agree that they will not come to work or be at work at any time under the influence of alcohol or any drug that could render them impaired.
Site Location: While the site is linked to our local retail store in Cranston our paddle sports activities occur at: Scalloptown Park (Rocky Hollow Road East Greenwich RI 02818)
Education Level: High School or GED
Position Requirements:
Must be at least 18 years old prior to first day of work
Current First Aid and Adult/Child CPR certification
30 days of availability throughout the season
Attend annual Policies & Procedures sport-specific trainings and in-season training
Preferred Skills and Qualifications:
Certification or specialized training in outdoor related activities
Experience planning organizing and leading outdoor experience trips or courses
Proven leadership skills
Ability to maintain a high level of enthusiasm motivation and a positive attitude
Established time management and organization skills
Demonstrated interpersonal written and verbal communication skills
Ability to work a flexible schedule including nights weekends and holidays
Previous experience working in the outdoors
