TheFinancial Controller reports directly to the President and CEO and will be responsible for the oversee and manage full cycle reporting and compliance of the Finance & Accounting Department at ACS.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage the general ledger and lead the monthly quarterly and annual financial close processes.
- Prepare accurate and timely financial statements and reports in accordance with accounting standards and policies
- Oversee corporate financial reporting and ensure consistent reliable reporting of monthly operating results.
- Support year-end compliance planning and execution including preparing working papers and coordinating the completion of reviewed financial statements and annual corporate tax returns.
- Ensure full compliance with federal and provincial financial regulations including GST tax filings payroll remittances and WCB reporting.
- Work closely with all operational departments and ensure accurate invoicing communication holdback reconciliations completion tracking and optimize project reporting.
Project Forecasting & Analysis
- Review and analyze operational and project-level budgets comparing actuals to budget and prior periods to identify trends and variances.
- Collaborate with Project Managers to support project cost reviews WIP tracking and profitability analysis.
- Oversee the monitoring and internal reporting of project financials in collaboration with Project Managers including actual vs. budgeted revenues costs and expenses.
- Update project cost projections accrued costs deferred revenue and work-in-progress (WIP) revenue.
- Deliver regular project cash flow updates in collaboration with the corporate financial reporting and project profitability reporting.
- Develop meaningful metrics dashboards and financial reports for leadership identifying discrepancies and providing actionable insights.
Cash Management
- Manage complete A/R and A/P cycle ensure timely collections of A/R and accurate payments of invoices.
- Review all payment runs made to vendors.
- Complete monthly bank reconciliation and ensure no unreconciled differences between cash and G/L
Policy Controls & Systems
- Establish communicate and maintain accounting policies procedures and internal controls to ensure best practices and risk mitigation.
- Regularly review and update policies and procedures to align with evolving business needs and regulatory requirements.
- Drive consistency and efficiency across all financial accounting and reporting processes.
- Support and lead implementation and upgrades of financial systems (e.g. ERP accounting platforms project management software etc.)
- Create and refine internal systems to improve the integrity accessibility and usability of financial data.
Leadership & Team Development
- Lead manage and mentor the accounting team including direct supervision and performance management of the Accounting Technician.
- Provide operational and technical accounting expertise to the finance department.
- Conduct regular 1:1s and team meetings offering constructive feedback and support to foster high performance.
- Support a positive team culture that reflects the organizations values and promotes continuous improvement.
- Contribute to the recruitment and onboarding of new finance team members as needed.
Strategic & Cross-Functional Support
- Provide financial insights and recommendations to the leadership team to support strategic decision-making.
- Collaborate with stakeholders across departments to ensure financial information aligns with organizational goals and stakeholder needs.
- Support process improvement and systems optimization across departments to improve financial efficiency and consistency.
Qualifications and Experience Required:
- CPA designation (required)
- 5 years of progressive accounting experience including 23 years in a Controller or senior accounting leadership role ideally within the construction or project-based industry.
- Strong understanding of construction/project accounting including cost tracking progress billing deferred revenue and holdback timing and reconciliations.
- Proven leadership skills with a demonstrated ability to build effective trust-based relationships and foster team development.
- Strong business acumen with excellent analytical problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
- Exceptional verbal and written communication skills with the ability to convey financial information clearly to both financial and non-financial stakeholders.
- Technologically adept with a proactive approach to leveraging software to improve processes.
- Experience in departmental planning to support strategic planning considered an asset.
- Proficient in accounting and reporting systems such as QuickBooks Online and MS 365 with a strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in project management software such as Procore and inBuild.

- Salary based on experience starting at $100000 CAD/year.
