Position Summary: The Head Coach at Vanguard University provides overall leadership of the program and sustains a dynamic team program where student-athletes demonstrate exceptional skills while being fully committed to the mission and goals of the university and adhering to all rules and regulations to all current affiliation policies as well as applicable conference and national association rules and regulations. Responsible for establishing a culture of compliance with Pacific West Conference and NCAA rules within the program. Maintains a clear understanding of the institutions emergency medical plans and is certified in CPR/AED blood borne pathogens and first aid. The Head Coach reports to the Director of Athletics. Essential Functions: - Develops a strong team culture to reflect Vanguards mission and readily demonstrates action toward meeting student development goals athletic department objectives and team success.
- Use sport-specific knowledge training technique and team-building leadership skills to implement a competitively excellent team.
- Develops a leadership focus consistent with the university mission that promotes individual student-athletes spiritual growth team involvement in service worship and involvement in any athletic department activities that also supports the overall spiritual growth of Vanguard University students.
- Monitor academic progress and builds a program that results in high retention and graduation rates while helping the student body enthusiastically embrace and support the team and its activities.
- Recruiting:
- Work closely with Admissions on the recruitment of all Prospective Student-Athletes.
- Strong understanding of and adheres to all university conference and national association recruiting policies and procedures.
- Focused recruiting efforts to result in effective signings of student-athletes who are institutionally compatible in lifestyle standards academic expectations commitment to graduation and enhancing the VU brand.
- Facilitate the provision of all information necessary to determine Prospective Student-Athlete eligibility.
- Ensure all recruiting activities are entered in Teamworks software.
- Builds and fosters positive relationships with high school junior college and club coaches.
- Reaches roster goals as defined by the athletic department and University.
- Build a collegial environment in decision-making and administrative effectiveness throughout the University campus and within the athletic department staff.
- Builds and maintain the program budget under the guidance of the athletic department administration.
- Actively engages in opportunities to enhance the team and the department through utilization of the Vanguard University athletics fundraising program with specific annual targets each year for supplemental funds to be raised.
- Responsible for working with the Director of Athletics and University Advancement Office to build significant relationships with community alumni and potential donors for the program.
- Prepares a budget proposal according to set guidelines for the program.
- Prepares schedules on an agreed deadline and submits it to the athletic department administration for approval.
- Notifies the Associate Athletic Director for Compliance/SWA of any roster and schedule changes.
- Organizes and conducts practice sessions and strength sessions in and out of season.
- Notifies athletic department administration and athletic trainers of any changes through Teamworks process.
- Works with the Director of Athletics (or designee) on travel details well in advance of events to coordinate the use of vehicles and time schedules within the policies and budgets.
- Notifies Associate Athletic Director for Compliance/SWA scholarship offers for all student-athletes and recruits by the appropriate deadline.
- Recommends student-athletes for award certificates and other special awards according to policies established for awards.
- Provides Associate Athletic Director for Compliance/SWA with a squad list and all persons who may be in official party when traveling (this must be completed by the first practice and kept up to date).
- Informs all team members of specific eligibility regulations and counsels team members regarding their responsibility to maintain eligibility. The coach should be alert to potential problems and may request information from the Associate Athletic Director for Compliance/SWA.
- Submits requests for the following items according to current procedure policies:
- Purchases of equipment and supplies approved in the budget team travel expenses and recruiting expenses.
- Keeps the supplies and equipment in full repair and secure and includes supervising and coordinating the prudent use of these items during the season and storage during the remainder of the year.
- Hires personnel to assist with the implementation of the program as approved in the current budget. Clearance should be obtained at the beginning of the season from the Director of Athletics and/or designee.
- Accepts full responsibility for student-athletes conduct and appearance during home or away events and while on trips.
- Gives careful attention to the planning of transportation for a team to arrive at a contest with maximum safety and comfort and minimal class interference.
- Works with Assistant Athletic Director for Communications regarding team pictures and website information.
- Actively works toward influencing the student-athletes conduct public image and spirit of cooperativeness in accord with university objectives. If University regulations have been violated the coach must inform the Director of Athletics and/or sport oversight and discipline measures will be taken in consultation with the University conduct team.
- Attends appropriate coaches meeting participates in conference functions and turns in national regional and conference information requests and ballots. This involves keeping the Director of Athletics and/or sport oversight informed of current trends and/or legislation which may affect the athletics program.
- Attend and participate in department meetings.
- Reviews national association rules with student-athletes when necessary and reinforce the importance of compliance.
- Accepts responsibility to provide complete and accurate expense reports. Reconcile P-card expenses in accordance with the timeline of reciliation by the Office of Accounting.
- Declares playing and practice seasons and submit to the Associate Athletic Director for Compliance/SWA for review and approval at appropriate deadlines.
- Ensures teams compliance with national association rules related to playing and practice seasons including athletically related activity logs.
- Monitors the scheduling process verifying that the schedule meets national and conference scheduling requirements and missed class time policies.
- Follows the established process for renewal and non-renewal of athletically related Financial Aid.
- Follows Athletic Department equipment and apparel policies and procedures.
- Notifies the Assistant Athletic Director for Communications names for the Pass List by the established deadline.
- Ensure camp/clinic procedures are followed.
- Must be CPR and First Aid certified.
- Accepts responsibility to know and understand NCAA DII Pacific West Conference rules and regulations. Promotes an atmosphere of compliance within the athletic department and assists or advises the staff and student-athletes to prevent compliance violations. The same would apply for any athletic organization to which the University holds membership. This responsibility entails reading and studying materials available and attending professional conferences and meetings to remain advised on current regulations trends and conduct of student-athletes.
- Performs other related responsibilities as assigned by the Director of Athletics.
Minimum Qualifications: - Bachelors degree required.
- At least three years experience in athletics department environment or the equivalent thereof.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office suite of applications.
- Exceptional office management organizational writing and communication skills.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and professional demeanor with internal and external publics.
- Ability to work independently and prioritize diverse and specialized details and tasks.
- Ability to handle complaints and assist in conflict management.
- Absolute preservation of confidential records financial data and agreed upon conversations.
- Ability to be flexible to changing conditions needs and job responsibilities.
- A strong interest in seeing intercollegiate athletes succeed.
- An understanding and sensitivity to FERPA laws as it pertains to student-athletes.
- A working knowledge of NCAA rules bylaws and philosophies.
- Excellent customer service: must be team-oriented able to demonstrate exceptional communication abilities both orally and in writing and work with multiple audiences both externally and internally.

- Knowledge and acceptance of the mission principles and philosophies of Vanguard University.
Salary: Full-time position. The salary range is $64000-$69000 and includes a generous benefits package. |
