This is an entry-level position which serves as an Assistant Resident Engineer in the Charlotte Residents Office. The position will assist the Resident Engineer in providing day-to-day management and contract administration of roadway and structure projects constructed by private contractors. The position is also responsible for the supervision of lower-level technicians. Specific duties will include but not be limited to performing project field inspections preparing monthly/final pay estimates creating reviewing and evaluating supplemental agreements and claims ensure compliance with both NCDOT and external environmental agency erosion control and permit requirements resolve constructability issues and serve as DOT project representative for formal and informal meetings with contractors utilities local officials media and the general public. Employee will be expected to communicate in a clear and concise manner both orally and in writing. Employee will need the ability to make independent decisions using sound engineering judgment. Employee should have experience using computers and electronic tablets with SharePoint and HICAMS experience preferred. Employee will be expected to apply Department safety standards and program to operations.Management prefers applicants with the following:
Additional Expectations:
Employee may be exposed to hazards including construction equipment high traffic volumes and heights over water or traffic and will be expected to work outside in varying temperature and weather conditions. Employee will be expected to perform moderate physical activity such as walking climbing kneeling and standing. Employee may need to work nights weekends and holidays as required. Safety toe shoes required.
Bachelors degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Necessary Special Qualification:
May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.
