Position Title: Hill Captain
Reports To: Brundage Patrol Director

Brundage Mountain Patrol is made up of a dedicated group that makes riding at Brundage a safe fun and exciting experience for our guests. We are a group committed to learning and using emergency care skills as we enjoy skiing snowboarding and other recreational activities. As a hill captain you will be a part of the patrol supervisory team
assisting the Ski Patrol Director in the assignment and supervision of daily patrol activities providing leadership for the professional first aid and rescue operations provided by Brundage Mountain addition to patroller responsibilities you may lead and/or supervise rescue operations such as lift evacuation night search avalanche control rescue and mass casualty incidents.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
- Be able to coordinate and supervise patrollers in all aspects of patrol duties including prioritizing daily tasks and assignments special events avalanche mitigation and other aspects of the patrol job.
- Provide professional friendly and courteous service including first aid alpine rescue mountain safety and guest services. Assist patrollers when supervisory assistance is needed with guest interactions.
- Know and actively enforce Idaho statute 6 chapter 11 Your Responsibility Code Brundage Mountain Resort rules and regulations and insurance requirements.
- Maintain complete knowledge of patrol procedures; supervise instruct and guide other patrol members in following patrol procedures.
- Assist in developing and updating protocols and living documents.
- Assist in preparing monthly weekly and daily schedules.
- Supervise daily work assignments/special duties.
- Prepare and lead daily morning meetings debriefings etc. with the patrol supervisory team.
- Along with Patrol Director and Assistant Patrol Director manage/organize/instruct training for pre-season refresher early season and new Patroller training provide ongoing EMT and in-service on-the-snow training.
- Evaluate and approve patroller medical and toboggan proficiency to meet BMP standards by leading annual resort proficiency check offs.
- Conduct training opportunities for additional mountain staff.
- Lead and/or supervise rescue operations such as lift evacuation night search avalanche control rescue and mass casualty incidents.
- Perform incident investigations for on hill and/or premises incidents & associated reporting.
- Supervise and direct maintenance of trail safety markings pads and hazards.
- Complete all required documentation in a timely and professional manner including logs incident reports and checklists. Provide weekly quality assurance of paperwork and documentation for patrollers.
- Participate in annual patroller review preparation.
- Continued responsibilities outlined in the ski patroller job description.
Other Responsibilities:
- Provide supervision and training to all Patrollers and motivate them to achieve the next professional level in their Patrol status (Level 1-Level 3).
- Notify Patrol Director or Assistant Patrol Director of any performance behavior or insubordination issues. Possess the ability to address and document individual and team successes and opportunities. Desire to coach individuals through opportunities and develop remediation plans for follow through.

Job Qualifications:
- EMT license and/or Outdoor Emergency Care (OEC) certified.
- EMTs must become licensed in Idaho upon employment
- BLS CPR for the professional rescuer
- Must be an expert level skier/snowboarder capable of skiing all types of terrain under all weather conditions
- Must be able to work in inclement weather in a high alpine environment
- Ability to reason and deal with emergency situations performing under high stress
- Must use manual dexterity to operate equipment
- Must be able to lift maneuver carry at least 50 pounds
- Must have sight speech and hearing abilities sufficient to learn skills follow and provide directions. Ability to hear & communicate over a two-way radio
- Must possess basic computer skills/knowledge
- Must have excellent guest service and interpersonal skills
- Must work well on a team
- Effective and efficient organizational skills time management prioritization etc.
- Positive and supportive leadership skills.
- Proficiency with computer use including Word Excel Power Point Google Sheets Google Docs Iphone etc.
- Completion of avalanche course Recreational Level 1 (minimum)
- Basic understanding of snow physics
- Trained for and able to train in specialized rescues such as ascenders high angle low angle difficult extrications and transports.
- At least 4 years of patrol experience with a minimum of 2 years in a leadership or supervisory position.
Other Commitments/Requirements:
- Must commit to an annual schedule including weekends and holidays from Nov.-April. Schedule typically starts mid-October. Available for planning work during the pre-post season (possibly remote).
- Arrive prior to the morning meeting to perform preparation tasks. Patrol sweeps are generally off the mountain by about 5:00 pm. Patrollers are dismissed when all guests patrollers and employees are down and mountain is called clear. Must be flexible to accommodate for a delayed closing and early up for snow safety work.
- Must be at least 21 years of age upon employment.
- Must pass a criminal history and background check
- Must have a valid Drivers License and pass an insurance driving history inquiry.
