JOB SUMMARY:
The Dance Instructor Lead supports the Glen Ellyn Park Districts Cultural Arts Division by leading recreational dance instruction mentoring fellow dance instructors and acting as a liaison between the dance staff and Cultural Arts leadership. This role requires a blend of teaching expertise program planning and team leadership. The Dance Instructor Lead is expected to take initiative demonstrate reliability and contribute to the continued success and growth of the Park Districts dance programming.
EDUCATION EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:
- High School graduate or equivalent is required with related college courses preferred or comparable training and/or experience.
- Previous experience working with the Glen Ellyn Park Districts Dance Academy required.
- Possess good problem-solving skills and have the capacity to act rationally and calmly in high stress and/or emergency situations.
- Possess good safety awareness and utilize sound judgment in all aspects of this position.
- Ability to read understand and communicate in English both verbally and in writing.
- Able to work independently and as part of a team is essential.
- Able to effectively communicate with supervisors and other staff as well as the public and provide quality customer service.
- Available to work a flexible schedule including evenings holidays and weekends.
- Must be in good physical condition to perform manual labor stand and walk for extended periods of time and have manual dexterity and sufficient strength to lift and/or move 50 pounds or more on a regular basis.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
- Instruct a variety of recreational dance classes across multiple age groups and skill levels.
- Choreograph and lead dance segments in Chameleon Theatres musical productions (3 hours of rehearsal per week unless discussed with Manager of Cultural Arts Camps & Seniors.) This includes creating and providing a video of each dance to the productions team including a 60 second audition piece.
- Attend Chameleon Theatres musical productions auditions to access auditionees skills and reteach audition choreography.
- Take the lead in choreography for dance showcases and recitals with collaboration from other dance instructors.
- Provide constructive feedback to participants in a positive developmentally appropriate manner.
- Support high-quality class instruction through preparation enthusiasm and creativity.
- Substitute teach dance classes as needed and upon request.
- Act as the lead representative and advocate for the dance staff in collaboration with the Cultural Arts Coordinator.
- Provide mentorship and training to new and seasonal dance instructors under instruction of the Cultural Arts Coordinator.
- Assist the Cultural Arts Coordinator in creating a cirriculum for all dance classes.
- Offer timely supportive feedback to fellow instructors to maintain instructional consistency and quality.
- Attend all scheduled dance staff meetings and actively contribute to discussions.
- Collaborate with the Cultural Arts Coordinator to provide input on seasonal class offerings and instructor assignments.
- Take the lead in creating the Autumn 2025 Dance Schedule in collaboration with the Manager of Cultural Arts during the absence of the Cultural Arts Coordinator.
- Assist in long-term planning for the dance program including ideas for class development instructor training and special events.
- Share creative input on recital themes costume selection and performance elements.
- Maintain open efficient and respectful communication with the Cultural Arts Coordinator and Manager of Cultural Arts Camps and Seniors.
- Demonstrate strong organizational skills and the ability to meet deadlines.
- Ensure accurate and timely submission of attendance choreography notes and other administrative tasks.
- Uphold and enforce Park District policies and safety guidelines during classes and rehearsals.
- Show flexibility in scheduling and availability particularly during seasonal program changes or special events.
