Job Description

TITLE:Substance Use Prevention Specialist
TYPE:Unit A Collective Bargaining Agreement
SALARY:Per Unit A Collective Bargaining Agreement
REPORTS TO:Director of Counseling


OBJECTIVE:To deliver comprehensive substance use prevention and mental health servicesincluding psychoeducation early intervention and assessment to students in
grades 6-12 at one or more sites.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Provide prevention and psycho educational lessons as requested by teachers and health educators on a weekly basis in the area of substance use and mental health.


2. Counsel individuals and small groups of students experiencing alcohol and other drug use and dependence problems.


3. Conduct initial assessments and provide appropriate services or referrals for students experiencing or at risk for alcohol and other drug use concerns.


4. Coordinate services with building level Student Support Teams.


5. Organize and facilitate group sessions for students with substance use and mental health issues and students returning to school from substance abuse treatment programs.


6. Identify engage and integrate community-based organizations into prevention and intervention planning for wrap-around services.


7. Assist the Director of Counseling in maintaining an up-to-date comprehensive resource directory for substance use and mental health services.


8. Maintain files and a database on services provided.

9. Review district data (e.g. academic attendance behavior SBIRT Youth Risk Behavior) to identify at-risk students create intervention plans and monitor progress of those receiving substance use support services.


10. Complete annual Youth Behavior Risk Surveys with identified grade levels.


11. Provide educational expertise and information on all substance use and mental health concerns to students staff and parents/guardians.


12. Perform any other duties that may be assigned by the Director of Counseling.


REQUIRED MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education Training and Experience

Applicants should have (or be able to obtain) one of the following licenses:

1. Licensed Social Worker (LCSW) Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) or Licensed Mental Health Counselor. (LMHC)
2. School Adjustment Counselor/School Social Worker MA DESE certification.
3. Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADAC) or working towards certification.
4. Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor I (LADC-1)
5. DESE licensure in Health Education


Applicants should have the following or similar experience:
1. Experienced in a school or social service agency working with at-risk school-aged children and youth.
2. Experience working with and developing a comprehensive substance use prevention program.
3. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Director of Counseling and Superintendent deem appropriate.


ADA and Minimum Qualifications to Perform Essential Job Functions
1. Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to operate a variety of equipment including computers copiers adding machines etc. Must be able to exert up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to lift carry push and pull or otherwise move objects including the human body. Must be able to stand crouch and bend over for a long period of time at intervals throughout the day.


2. Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional structural or composite characteristics (whether similar or divergent from obvious standards) of data people or things.


3. Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes giving instructions assignments or directions to subordinates or assistants.


4. Language Ability: Requires the ability to read a variety of correspondence reports forms
newsletters schedules manuals invoices requisitions menus recipes journals etc. Requires the ability to prepare correspondence reports forms evaluations procedures charts surveys articles bid specifications brochures news releases handbooks budgets etc. using prescribed formats and conforming to all rules of punctuation grammar diction and style. Requires the ability to speak before groups of people with poise voice control and confidence.


5. Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems collect data establish facts and draw valid conclusions; to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form; and to deal with several abstract and concrete variables.


6. Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to record and deliver information to explain procedures to follow oral and written instructions. Must be able to communicate effectively and efficiently in a variety of technical or professional languages including medical legal accounting and marketing terminology.


7. Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas; to add and subtract; multiply and divide; utilize decimals and percentages; and to apply the principles of algebra and geometry.


8. Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length width and shape.


9. Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately in using office equipment.


10. Manual Dexterity: Requires the ability to handle a variety of items such as office equipment and hand tools. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.


11. Interpersonal: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with emergency situations.


12. Physical Communication: Requires the ability to talk (expressing or exchanging ideas by means of spoken words) and hear (perceiving nature of sounds by ear). Must be able to communicate via telephone or radio.
