Position Overview
The General Clerk supports the mission of the U.S. Attorneys Office (USAO) by providing direct services to victims and witnesses of federal crimes. This role is integral to ensuring victims rights are upheld and that witnesses are effectively managed throughout the judicial process.
Key Responsibilities
Victim Assistance
- Assess victims immediate needs and provide referrals for medical housing employment and legal services.
- Assist attorneys in locating victims and evaluating their ability to testify.
- Prepare victims for court appearances and provide in-court support.
- Inform victims of their rights and significant case developments.
- Aid victims in seeking financial restitution and completing necessary documentation.
- Develop victim-centered responses for complex cases (e.g. mass casualty human trafficking).
Collaboration & Outreach
- Build and maintain relationships with law enforcement victim service providers and social service organizations.
- Represent USAO on task forces and working groups.
- Conduct workshops and presentations to educate stakeholders and the public on victim issues.
Administrative Support
- Provide clerical support to USAO personnel including data entry report preparation and case file management.
- Schedule appointments and respond to inquiries regarding case status.
- Maintain accurate internal records and perform analytical computations.
Qualifications
- High school diploma required; undergraduate degree preferred.
- U.S. citizenship and ability to meet DOJ residency and security clearance requirements.
- Strong communication and organizational skills.
- Proficiency in word processing data management and report formatting.
- Ability to work independently and collaboratively under pressure.
Work Conditions
- Standard office environment with occasional travel.
- Work hours: MondayFriday 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM (40 hours/week) excluding federal holidays.
- Overtime and holiday work require prior approval.
Security & Confidentiality
- Must pass a background investigation conducted within the last five years.
- Must maintain confidentiality of sensitive law enforcement and victim-related information.
Reporting & Performance
- Weekly activity reports required.
- Performance evaluated continuously; failure to meet standards may result in contract termination or personnel replacement.
Travel & Reimbursement
- Travel authorized by the Government will be reimbursed per Federal Travel Regulation (FTR) guidelines.
- Parking and mileage outside the duty station may be reimbursed; Alexandria office parking is not reimbursed.
