About the Opportunity

JOB SUMMARY

The Administrative Assistant & Staff Interpreter provides professional administrative support to the American Sign Language (ASL) and Interpreting Education Program (NUASLIE) and the 5 majors in the program (ASL-English Interpreting ASL/Psychology ASL/Linguistics ASL/Human Services ASL/Theater). They support the director and faculty in coordinating student and community engagement events and coordinate aspects of three major national events the annual Marie Jean Philip ASL Storytelling Poetry and Art Competition the ASL Festival and the NU ASLIE Program Summer coordination with the Lead Staff Interpreter the Administrative Assistant & Staff Interpreter provides ASL/English interpretation for courses faculty office hours and parents/students visiting classes. They assist the student Interpreting Club (ICNU) with planning monthly activities and events. They hire train and supervise work-study and Coop students; assist with part-time faculty hiring paperwork; process payments for team interpreters and guest lecturers/panelists. The Administrative Assistant & Staff Interpreter provides direct administrative support to the ASL Program Director and ASL Program faculty serves as a liaison between the Program and various University administrative units and outside agencies and interfaces with the Center for Atypical Language Interpretation (CALI). They attend regular meetings for budget and administrative staff. The Administrative Assistant & Staff Interpreter is responsible for ASL Program social media presence (NU ASL Program website ASL Program Facebook page Twitter Listserves). They recruit interview and train students to assist with ASL Program activities. They serve as the first point of contact for in-person faculty staff students visitors and guests and phone/videophone contacts and provide ad hoc assistance with bilingual (English-ASL) communications and in-office low-stakes interpreting as needed.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelors degree required. Ability to use Microsoft Office Suite; prior experience providing administrative support in an office setting. Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) at the advance intermediate level. Basic video editing and marketing/communication and social media knowledge/skills preferred. Completion of an interpreter education program and/or interpreting/translation qualifications or experience a plus.

Expected Hiring Range:

$23.02 - $31.66

With the pay range(s) shown above the starting salary will depend on several factors which may include your education experience location knowledge and expertise and skills as well as a pay comparison to similarly-situated employees already in the role. Salary ranges are reviewed regularly and are subject to change.
