Position Summary:

The Surgical Assistant Student works under direct supervision to support both surgical or sterile processing teams gaining hands-on experience in perioperative services and instrument sterilization. This role requires provisional certification from an accredited CST or CRCST program with the expectation of obtaining full certification within six (6) months of employment.

Job Duties & Essential Functions:

Surgical Support (CST-Aligned):

  • Assist in preparing the operating room and sterile field
  • Perform basic surgical scrubbing techniques under supervision
  • Pass instruments and supplies to surgeons and team members during procedures
  • Support turnover between surgical cases and adherence to infection prevention protocols
  • Comply with AORN and AST standards of practice

Sterile Processing Support (CRCST-Aligned):

  • Clean inspect assemble and sterilize surgical instruments and trays
  • Operate sterilization equipment in compliance with facility and regulatory standards
  • Maintain accurate records of sterilization cycles and quality assurance logs
  • Ensure proper instrument handling tracking and storage

General Duties:

  • Communicate effectively with surgical nursing and sterile processing staff
  • Follow HIPAA OSHA and infection control regulations
  • Participate in ongoing training evaluations and clinical supervision

Required Qualifications:

  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Provisional certification from an accredited CST or CRCST program
  • Recent completion of an accredited Surgical Technology or Sterile Processing program
  • Hands-on experience with basic OR procedures instrument handling and sterilization techniques
  • Familiarity with aseptic technique surgical terminology and infection control standards
  • Experience using sterilization equipment and tracking systems

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Clinical experience in a surgical or sterile processing setting
  • Familiarity with surgical instrumentation aseptic technique and sterilization processes
  • Strong attention to detail organization and communication skills

Certifications or Licenses

  • Eligibility to obtain full certification within six (6) months of employmentfrom one of the following:
    • NBSTSA National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (CST)
    • NCCT National Center for Competency Testing (CST)
    • HSPA/IAHCSMM Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (CRCST)

Work Schedule:

  • Rotating Schedule including days evenings and weekends

Salary Range:

  • $22.00
