DEFINITION


SUPERVISING JUVENILE CORRECTIONS OFFICER
Probation Department

Team-oriented work environment - Changing people for the better

What Youll Do:

A Supervising Juvenile Corrections Officer is responsible for:
  • Supervising and reviewing the work of assigned juvenile hall staff.
  • Evaluating employees performance and preparing annual evaluations.
  • Participating with developing recreation and evidence-based treatment programs.
  • Monitoring and enforcing hall rules and safety and security measures.
  • Providing training and guidance to staff in work procedures.

Where Youll Do It:

This position is located in the Juvenile Hall at 2006 Harrison Avenue in Eureka CA.
Shift work
  • 8 hour shifts ranging from 7:00 am - 3:00 pm; 11:00 pm - 7:00 am; 3:00 pm - 11:00 pm

PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING:

No person shall be considered for employment with the Humboldt County Probation Department if they have a drug history involving illicit drug use within the last three years intravenous drug use or have ever engaged in felonious drug activity.

The successful candidate for this position will be required to undergo a detailed background investigation.



DEFINITION

Under general supervision supervises the staff and participates in the activities of Juvenile Hall on an assigned shift; performs related work as assigned.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

This is the first supervisory level in this series responsible for planning organizing supervising and reviewing the work of assigned juvenile detention hall staff and participating in activities. This class is distinguished from Assistant Superintendent of Juvenile Hall in that the latter assists in the overall management and administration of all Juvenile Hall activities.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

  • Plans organizes supervises reviews and evaluates the work of assigned staff at the juvenile detention center; trains staff in work procedures.
  • Participates in the hiring of assigned staff recommending selection for management approval.
  • Evaluates employee performance counsels employees and effectively recommends initial disciplinary action and other personnel decisions.
  • Monitors and enforces hall rules and safety and security measures; determines and/or applies disciplinary measures for juveniles.
  • Conducts individual and family counseling sessions to resolve crisis and problems and establish behavioral goals; completes diagnostic evaluations as assigned.
  • Advises and participates with staff in the development and implementation of recreational and treatment programs in Juvenile Hall; provides crisis intervention and referral as required.
  • Determines appropriateness of admission or release of juveniles and completes necessary paperwork; serves as a member of the diagnostic team.
  • Establishes and maintains communication and consultation with probation officers families teachers physicians law enforcement and social services agencies and others regarding juvenile detainees. Assists physicians in medical screenings of juveniles and ensure that medical orders are implemented.
  • Implements and maintains extensive behavior modification programs for court remanded juveniles and applies modified principles to entire hall population.
  • Reviews and prepares logs records and reports; inventories and orders supplies; attends and conducts staff meetings and training sessions.
  • Investigates behavior problems and special incidents; restrains physically abusive juveniles.

QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge of:

  • Principles and practices of employee supervision including selection training work evaluation and discipline.
  • Principles practices methods and equipment used in juvenile detention.
  • Operation of a juvenile detention facility.
  • Applicable federal state and local laws regulations and standards.
  • Principles and practices of applied psychology and behavior modification procedures particularly for juvenile offenders.
  • Safety and security practices and precautions relating to a juvenile detention facility.
  • Basic principles practices and procedures of juvenile civil and criminal systems.
  • Public and private community resources and agencies.
Skill in:
  • Planning organizing reviewing and evaluating the work of staff.
  • Training others in work procedure.
  • Assessing and evaluating the risks and needs of juvenile detainees.
  • Overseeing and monitoring the daily living activities of juvenile detainees.
  • Monitoring and enforcing rules and safety and security measures.
  • Responding in emergency and crisis situations calmly and effectively.
  • Exercising initiative and independent judgment within established guidelines.
  • Preparing clear and concise reports records and other written materials.
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work.
Other Requirements:
  • Must possess a valid California drivers license.
  • Must be able to meet physical and psychological standards and pass a detailed background investigation.
  • Must possess a State Board of Corrections Basic Institutions Training certificate.
  • Must possess a State Board of Corrections Basic Supervisor Core Training certificate prior to completion of probation. Must possess CPR and First Aid certificates.
Desirable Education and Experience:
A typical way to obtain the knowledge and skills outlined above is:

Equivalent to graduation from a four year college or university degree with major coursework in psychology counseling or a related field and two years of experience in juvenile detention at a level equivalent to the Countys class of Juvenile Corrections Officer.

PROBATIONARY PERIOD

Persons appointed to regular County positions serve a probationary period. This is normally six (6) months but could be up to one (1) year. All designated safety employees serve a one-year probationary period.

DISASTER SERVICE WORKERS

All County of Humboldt employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
