Job Description

Marion County requires on-site work. Remote work is not available.


The mission of the District Attorneys Office is to seek justice through:
  • Promoting accountability for criminal offenders.
  • Interpreting enforcing and executing law.
  • Responding to the concerns of victims and the public; and
  • Working cooperatively with members of the justice system.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
Independently performs legal support activities of a complex clerical nature which require specialized training and skills.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the supervision of a Legal Assistant Supervisor who assigns work establishes goals and reviews results obtained for compliance with department policies procedures and goals.

SUPERVISION EXERCISED
Supervision of employees is not a responsibility of positions in this classification.

Typical Duties - Duties include but are not limited to the following

  • Utilizes computers to access retrieve and input information.
  • Composes correspondence and legal documents.
  • Opens updates and closes physical case files and computer files.
  • Maintains computer records for case files.
  • Accesses computerized calendaring system.
  • Electronically files court documents.
  • Schedules victims witnesses and police officers for court hearings.
  • Maintains liaison with other law enforcement agencies.
  • Answers public inquiries.
  • Files documents and case files.
  • Collects organizes and prepares files for the daily court calendar.
  • Locates and distributes physical files as applicable.
  • Completes tasks in electronic work queue through the computerized case management system.
  • Represents District Attorneys office in county and outside agency committees.
  • Provide back-up and training/on-boarding to other areas where the business need is the greatest.
  • Other duties as assigned by your supervisor.

Requirements for the Position

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING

  1. High school diploma or equivalent; AND
  2. Three years of experience in office and secretarial work one year of which must be equivalent to the level of Legal Secretary 1 in a public or private law office; OR
  3. Any satisfactory combination of work education training or experience relevant to the position as determined by Marion County.
PREFERENCES
  • Supplemental secretarial training is preferred.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Considerable knowledge of accepted modern office practices procedures and techniques; English composition spelling and grammar; arithmetic; concepts of prioritizing/organizing work; modern office equipment and machinery and their intended use; a variety of computer systems and software.

Ability and skill to independently accurately and effectively perform assigned tasks and duties following established procedures and policies; meet and assist the public staff and other personnel of other businesses in a courteous professional manner; comprehend and adhere to stated oral and written instructions communications and procedures; apply principles policies and procedures to specific work assignments; compose correspondence and legal documents in business form; communicate effectively in both oral and written form; use tact and judgment in dealing with the public concerning sensitive and confidential matters; types accurately and at an acceptable rate of speed; access and use various computer systems and software.

PHYSICALREQUIREMENTS
Bends forward carries up to 10 lbs.; lifts up to 25 lbs.; hears at a normal speech level; reaches overhear; repetitive motion of hands and wrists reads a 12-pt. font; sits for extended periods of time talking and walking;turning neck (45 degrees); possible exposure to office chemicals.

PUBLIC SERVICE LOAN FORGIVENESS
Marion County is a qualifying public employer for the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program. Through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program full-time employees working at the County may qualify for forgiveness of the remaining balance on Direct Student Loans after 120 qualifying monthly payments under a qualifying repayment plan. Questions about your student loan eligibility should be directed to your loan servicer or the US Department of Education.

VISA SPONSORSHIP
Marion County does not offer VISA sponsorship. Within three days of hireyou will be required to complete the US Department of Homeland Securitys I-9 form confirming authorization to work in the United States.
