About us

The Queensland Fire Department (QFD) provides fire prevention preparedness and response services to fire in the built and landscape environments as well as scientific and specialist capabilities to Queensland communities. The QFD provides a multi-hazard emergency response including road crash rescue bushfire hazardous material technical and vertical rescue severe weather incidents remote and swiftwater rescue and provides a number of functions supporting community safety outcomes.


The department encompasses Queensland Fire and Rescue (QFR) Rural Fire Service Queensland (RFSQ) as well as the broader department which work together to pre-empt prevent mitigate and manage the consequences of fires and other emergencies on Queensland communities and support our large volunteer membership across the state.


The QFD is an organisation that is committed to reframing the departments relationship with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples communities and organisations through activities identified in the QFD Reframing the Relationship Plan contributing to Closing the Gap outcomes and building our cultural capability.

Purpose of the role

QFR is responsible for ensuring the capacity of operational staff to respond in emergent situations as legislated in the Fire Services Act 1990.

As a Station Officer within QFR you will be responsible for operational command and control daily management of a fire and rescue station and providing leadership to firefighters relating to:

  • Protect and serve the community by responding to fires and other emergencies in a professional and timely manner to minimise loss to life property and the environment.
  • Improve the safety and emergency preparedness of the community by contributing to fire prevention and community education activities.

Special Conditions: Successful applicants will

  • be appointed to the rank of Station Officer and will be allocated to a role at the discretion of the delegated authority.
    • The officer may be re-allocated to an alternative Station Officer role at the same work location as operationally required.
    • Appointees may be required to undertake other duties at an equal rank or act in positions at a higher rank.
  • be required to continue skills drills and knowledge maintenance assessment and appraisal through programmed training provided by either officers on shift or designated training officers.
  • be required to undertake shift work arrangements and will have the ability to provide supervision for officers at the Firefighter classification level.

Mandatory requirements

This is an operational position. Only applicants with professional firefighting experience will be considered.


Applicants wishing to apply must provide evidence of the following:

  • a current valid Blue Card (from Blue Card Services).
  • manual Medium Rigid (MR) driver licence as recognised by the Queensland Department of Transport and Main Roads.
  • Australian/New Zealand citizenship or permanent residency as per requirements set out in Section 47 (1) (b) of the Public Sector Act 2022.

  • Successful completion of competency assessments through the QFR Station Officer Program as defined by the Commissioner QFD.

Your key accountabilities

Your part in the ongoing success of our department in providing key frontline services will see you responsible for a variety of work including but not limited to:

  • Manage operational incidents and direct firefighters and resources in response to emergency and hazardous material incidents in accordance with legislative powers and responsibilities including operations management policies procedures and practices.
  • Review and contribute to continuous improvement processes by providing feedback from lessons identified during operational incidents and maintains effective operations management standards.
  • Contribute to the management of staff and physical assets and financial responsibilities at station level to ensure appropriate service delivery standards in accordance with departmental delegations policy and procedures.
  • Manage the effective utilisation and maintenance of station resources including equipment and facilities to maintain operational readiness and contributes to operational service delivery and continuity plans.
  • Undertake station administration responsibilities in a timely and effective manner including the coordination and preparation of reports correspondence and submissions in accordance with departmental requirements and governance.
  • Coordinate and conduct community safety and fire prevention/education activities including building inspections and risk assessments to raise awareness of fire safety and emergency preparedness and to ensure the safety of firefighters and the community.
  • Manage training and staff development including the coordination and delivery of training exercises and education programs to maintain relevant operational competencies
  • Manage and undertake project and functional responsibilities relating to operational preparedness response and recovery to ensure effective planning and coordination is achieved.
  • Foster a cooperative and positive work environment through clearly communicating monitoring and assessing staff performance whilst providing fair and regular feedback to support professional development.
  • Develop cooperative and collaborative arrangements with our auxiliary and volunteer emergency service partners and other government agencies with respect to promoting an all hazards and all agency comprehensive approach to emergency incidents and events.
  • Contribute to the ongoing development and implementation of operational service plans at station level; provide leadership that is focused on the key issues; and set clear priorities and establish programs that meet deadlines and achieve work targets.
  • Manage communication within the workplace and liaise between other QFD stations other emergency services government agencies and the community in a timely and effective manner.
  • Maintain knowledge and ensure all legislative policy and procedural requirements appropriate to the position are applied.
  • Support enterprise bargaining agreement initiatives principles and station consultative committees.
  • Comply with responsibilities of Workforce Health and Safety legislation.
  • Promote the values in the Code of Conduct for the Queensland Public Service including demonstrating a commitment to the principles and practices of employment equity ethical decision-making and conflict resolution.
