Job Description

Type of Appointment: Full-Time Probationary

Job Classification:Instructional Support Technician III

Anticipated Hiring Range:$5053 - $6333 per month

Work Hours: Monday - Friday 8am - 5pm unless otherwise notified

THE DEPARTMENT:

The Plant Science department (PLT) is an academic unit within the Don B. Huntley College of Agriculture. The PLT department offers one Bachelor of Science in Plant Science and one Master of Science in Agriculture-Plant Science Option. The department oversees the Center for Turf Irrigation and Landscape Technology (CTILT) and maintains over 1000 acres of diversified farmland in support of its educational and research programs.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Instructional Support

  • Provide instructional support for the following areas: AGRIScapes Green Houses CPP Orchards Spandra Farm Spadra Landfill Pastures and Microfarm.
  • Cost effectively acquire and safely store all needed items for learning and research such as chemicals instruments soil and irrigation equipment.
  • Support the coordination with other departments and colleges to implement state of the art technologies such as precision indoor and automated agriculture among others.

Safety Oversight

  • Identify and promptly complete any task related to safety.
  • Resolve any safety concerns complete and submit reports on safety issues.
  • Serve on the Colleges Safety Committee.
  • Complete safety inspections of the assigned areas. Maintain safety documentation of faculty and students and coordinate with Plant Science Department Chair regarding purchasing and safety issues. Work closely with the Farm manager and crew on safety issues and shared farming equipment.

Research Support

  • Support research In collaboration with the PIs oversee the safety and maintenance of areas designated to research projects located at Spadra AGRIScapes Green Houses CPP Orchards Spandra Farm Spadra Landfill Pastures and Microfarm.

Supervision of Student Assistants

  • Monitor student workers assisting in laboratories and educational activities Spadra AGRIScapes Green Houses CPP Orchards Spandra Farm Spadra Landfill Pastures and Microfarm.
  • Lead 3-7 student assistants including creating and maintaining a safe work area training and tracking student hours.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Combination - Equivalent to two (2) years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials supplies or equipment and in a discipline related to the area to which assigned may be substituted for one year of the required experience. OR Equivalent to four (4) years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials supplies or equipment and in a discipline related to the specialty area to which assigned may be substituted for two years of the required experience.
  • Driver License - Valid and in State Valid CA Drivers license with insurance.
  • Equivalent to four (4) years of experience providing instructional support services for a related unit or discipline or in producing materials or supplies or repairing equipment in a discipline related to specialty area to which assigned. OR
  • Experience in farm related equipment operations and maintenance and supplies necessary to produce crops.
  • Knowledge of the principles and methods related to performing support services; knowledge of the principles information methods and techniques related to discipline to which assigned; knowledge of the materials and supplies related to the curriculum their characteristics and uses. Ability to plan organize and schedule work; ability to operate and repair technical and scientific equipment; ability to coordinate support service to meet a comprehensive variety of needs; ability to develop off-campus resources related to the discipline for obtaining materials or equipment.

PREFERRED EXPERIENCE:

  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of procedures and techniques applicable to courses in plant science.
  • Experience in operating technical equipment and irrigation related to conventional precision and indoor agriculture.
  • Experience in planning activities and prepare schedules.
  • Experience in using methods techniques and skills related to the discipline in preparing specialized materials.
  • Knowledge of common safety procedures for handling and storage of chemicals and biological materials used in laboratory preparations along with handling hazardous chemical and biological waste.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills with the ability to set own priorities to coordinate multiple assignments with fluctuating and time-sensitive deadlines.
  • Basic competence with a variety of computer applications including word-processing spreadsheets databases on-line systems Internet as well as online calendaring and email.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of or ability to quickly learn University infrastructure.

Background Check

CSU Classification Salary Range

This position is part of the California State University Employees Union (CSUEU) bargaining unit 9. The CSU Classification Standards for this position are located on the CSU Classification Standards CSU Salary Schedule is located on the CSU Salary Schedule classification salary range for this position according to the respective skill level is: minimum$5053 and maximum$8765 per month. Please refer to the anticipated hiring range for the appropriate salary rate for this particular position.

University Driving Requirements

Positions that require driving for university business by using apersonal or state vehicle must comply with the Authorized University Driver Policy. Driving records are monitored and evaluated by the Risk Management Department. The Risk Management Department evaluates a good driving report based on the following criteria. The driver must: 1. Have a valid California or other State Drivers license. 2. Have no more than 3 motor vehicle violations or been the cause of 3 accidents in a 12-month period (or any combination of 3 thereof) 3. Not have more than 3 DMV Points if their license is Class C or 4. Not have more than 5 DMV Points if their license is Class A B or C with endorsements.
