Job Description

Director of Engineering - Pittsburgh Community Broadcasting


Pittsburgh Community Broadcasting is seeking a talented and enterprising individual to be the next Director of Engineering for radio stations 90.5 WESA and 91.3 WYEP.

The Director of Engineerings primary role is to oversee all radio broadcasting technology production and RF systems. The Director of Engineering works collaboratively with the Director of Technology (whose concentration is on the IT infrastructure) and is assisted in work by a fulltime Engineering and IT Technician in keeping our technical and production facilities operating at peak efficiency.

The nature of our business and of this position is 24/7. The Director of Engineering is on call at all hours (as are the Director of Technology and Engineering Technician) to assist with both the planned and the unforeseen technical requirements of the organization.

What youll need:

  • Bachelors Degree Technical school certification or equivalent experience in a technical discipline direct experience in a broadcasting and/or audio production environment preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of RF broadcast operations and engineering experience
  • Breadth of experience and versatility is essential.
  • Broadcast Radio Engineer certification (CBRE) through the Society of Broadcast Engineers or the ability to receive such certification within 6 months of employment
  • A collaborative leader accountable for ones work and invested in the success of others

Experience with automations systems such as Wide Orbit audio over IP experience AES67 Livewire and Axia experience preferred. Additionally experience managing transmitter and translator maintenance along with knowledge of AC/DC power systems and generators preferred.


Major role responsibilities include:

Broadcast Production and IT Infrastructure -

  • Design install inspect repair and maintain the broadcast/RF infrastructure for studio and remote sites digital and internet broadcast equipment including but not limited to broadcast equipment antenna systems satellite downlinks STL systems and all other RF related systems.
  • Design install and maintain studio and remote audio production infrastructure including but not limited to studio consoles audio routers recording equipment microphones digital audio systems automation and all related studio and field production recording and origination equipment.
  • Design install and maintain digital production infrastructure.
  • Maintain detailed documentation for all technical and production systems along with operating and maintenance logs.

Broadcast and Production Operations:

  • Maintain a 24/7 on-call emergency availability for all broadcast studio and IT systems as required.
  • Plan prioritize and ensure efficient technical operations and functions of the station and to ensure operational readiness.
  • Provide technical and production support for offsite broadcasting.
  • Maintains PCBC operational logs and records of operational parameters; maintains Public Information File required by Code of Federal Regulations (47 C.F.R. 73.3527).

Technology Planning and Strategy:

  • Ensure equipment performance meets industry standards coupled with good engineering practices.
  • Create equipment lists floor plans rack and console diagrams and audio diagrams.
  • Evaluate remote sites for broadcast feasibility and specify any necessary facility or site changes.
  • Create documentation to mirror department business practices including but not limited to policy and procedures training guides maintenance logs emergency and strategic plans.

Facilities and Administration:

  • Co-manage facility and real estate operation and maintenance with Engineering and IT.
  • Assist in development of annual operating budget.

Physical Requirements

  • Climbing ladders and working on elevated surfaces.
  • Must be able to lift 50 lbs. with reasonable accommodation.
  • Good manual dexterity for soldering and use of hand or power tools.
  • Able to stand walk crouch and reach while performing the duties of this job.
  • Able to travel to transmitter sites at remote locations.
