ATTENTION ALL APPLICANTS!

The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) Bridge Design Section is looking for an Engineering Assistant 1/2/3 Flex to help us Keep Alaska Moving!

Base Salary Information:
Engineering Assistant 1 $34.42 / hourly
Engineering Assistant 2 $39.67 / hourly
Engineering Assistant 3 $45.35 / hourly
What you will be doing:
The Bridge Engineering Assistant plays a hands-on role in managing and enhancing our states 1077 bridges! Youll be involved in a variety of exciting tasks from conducting bridge inspections and analyzing existing structures to designing new bridges and overseeing construction projects. Under the guidance of licensed engineers youll perform structural analysis calculations and prepare detailed plans specifications cost estimates and reports. Youll also create structural details calculate quantities and draft specifications for construction contracts. A position in the Bridge Section offers hands-on professional experience with a group of hard-working engineers who put safety first and are recognized nationally as experts in our field. The office has 25 staff members small enough to be personal but large enough to have a broad knowledge base in all subdisciplines of bridge engineering.

The working environment you can expect:
This position is located within DOT&PF Headquarters in Juneau at the DOT&PF 3-mile building on Channel Drive. The office work environment is casual-professional team-oriented and friendly. Bridge inspection assignments can involve travel to all regions of Alaska. We can reach most of our bridges via major airlines and driving but smaller aircraft including float planes are required to reach our remote bridge sites.
Juneau is in a temperate rainforest with steep-sided mountains glaciers and deep fjords within its boundaries. Outdoor recreational opportunities are abundant and Juneau is famous for its spectacular scenery (even on the rainy days). Hiking trail running skiing and cycling are popular pastimes.

Who we are looking for:
We are looking for an individual with the following desired core competencies that will contribute to their success in this position:

  • Structural Engineering: Knowledge of the concepts principles theories and methods related to the design and analysis of complex structures using a variety of materials. Structures may include aerospace systems or structures and other determinate or indeterminate systems.
  • Problem Solving: Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives and to make recommendations.
  • Written Communication: Writes in a clear concise organized and convincing manner for the intended audience.

Special Note:
  • A valid drivers license is required for this position.
  • Engineer-in-Training (Fundamentals of Engineering) Certification is preferred but not essential.

Engineering Assistant 1:

Bachelors degree

with a major in engineering architecture or land surveying from a

postsecondary institution accredited by ABET.

Or:

A bachelors degree

with a major in engineering architecture or land surveying from a

postsecondary institution not accredited by ABET.

AND

An

Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate

issued by a state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and

Surveyors; or verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or

Fundamentals of Surveying (FS) examination.

Special Note:

An applicant who

will obtain within nine months a bachelors degree from an institution

accredited by ABET with a major in engineering architecture or land

surveying will qualify to apply. An applicant qualifying under this option may

receive a job offer conditional upon completion of the degree requirement

within nine months and may begin work AFTER obtaining and showing proof of the

required degree.

Engineering-In-Training

or Flex Engineering Assistant 1/Engineering Assistant 2 positions will be

identified by the employing department.

Engineering Assistant 2:

Bachelors degree or the equivalent with a major in

engineering architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by

ABET.

AND

One year of entry level engineering architectural or

land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of

Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Or:

A bachelors degree with a major in engineering

architecture or land surveying from an institution not accredited by ABET.

AND

An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) or Land

Surveyor-In-Training (LSIT) certificate issued by a state or the National

Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or verification of passing

the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) or Fundamentals of Surveying (FS)

examination.

AND

One year of entry level engineering architectural or

land surveying experience as an Engineering Assistant 1 with the State of

Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Or:

Five years of progressively responsible

subprofessional engineering experience of which two years was as a Journey

level Engineering Technician or Drafting Technician 3 with the State of Alaska

or the equivalent elsewhere.

Substitution:

Graduate study in engineering and/or architecture may

be substituted for the required experience as an Engineering Assistant 1. (2

semester/3 quarter hours equal one month of experience).

Special Note:

The employing department will identify

Engineering-In-Training (EIT) positions.

Transcripts which indicate the credit hours earned for

the specific coursework may be requested at the time of interview or prior.

Engineering Assistant 3:

Bachelors degree with a major in engineering

architecture or land surveying from an institution accredited by ABET.

AND

Two years of engineering architectural or land

surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate

trainee level. The specific experience includes such work as an Engineering

Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Or:

A bachelors degree with a major in a branch of

engineering from an institution not accredited by ABET.

AND

An Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certificate issued by a

state or the National Council of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors; or

verification of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) examination.

AND

Two years of engineering architectural or land

surveying experience of which one year was at the working or intermediate

trainee level. The specific experience includes such work as an Engineering

Assistant 2 with the State of Alaska or the equivalent elsewhere.

Substitutions:

Four years of any combination of ABET accredited

postsecondary education in engineering architecture or land surveying (3

semester/4 quarter hours equal one month) and/or engineering architectural or

land surveying experience may substitute for the required degree.

Graduate study in engineering or architecture may be

substituted for the required experience (2 semester/3 quarter hours equal one

month).

FLEXIBLY STAFFED

This position is flexibly staffed. This vacancy may be filled at either the Engineering Assistant 1 Engineering Assistant 2 or Engineering Assistant 3 level depending on the applicants training and/or experience. The full range of salaries is listed above. Starting salary will be determined by the level the position is hired at.If filled at a lower level promotion to the higher level will occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training as well as the applicant meeting the minimum qualifications of the higher job class.
