Accountabilities
- Conduct regular inspections of tracks track beds and track right-of-way to identify and address any issues or defects.
- Replace and repair rails rail anchors spikes ballast ties and other necessary components as required.
- Assist in the unloading and movement of track materials and equipment from rail cars carts or trucks. Additionally dig holes and trenches as needed.
- Keep track beds well-maintained by cutting vegetation and brush and remove dust or snow from movable track parts through sweeping picking and digging.
- Perform various tasks related to railroad track maintenance repair and installation including the operation of heavy equipment.
- Adhere to company and industry safety rules practices and procedures to ensure a secure working environment.
- Foster positive working relationships with coworkers supervisors contractors and customers and handle high-pressure situations effectively.
- Ensure compliance with all railroad regulations for safety operations and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).
- Complete additional assigned duties as necessary.

Qualifications - Preferred
- Demonstrated experience working outdoors in diverse weather conditions either through professional personal or volunteer work.
- Possession of a valid Commercial Drivers License (CDL) Class A or Class B.
- Flexibility and availability to work on-call overtime various shifts seven days a week including weekends and holidays.
- Proficiency in operating heavy equipment such as construction machinery farm equipment etc. gained from professional personal or volunteer experience.
- Previous involvement in a construction-type environment showcasing relevant experience from professional personal or volunteer work.
- One year or more of experience in Railroad Maintenance of Way work.
- Proficiency in welding or possession of a welding certificate acquired through professional personal or volunteer experience.
Physical and Mental Job Requirements

- Physically Demanding Tasks: Must have the capacity to engage in physically demanding tasks including occasional bending stooping and kneeling.
- Lifting and Carrying: Must be able to occasionally lift and carry items weighing up to 65 lbs as well as push and pull objects up to 119 lbs.
- Standing: Must be capable of standing for extended periods during the workday with the flexibility to change positions periodically for comfort.
- Walking: Safely walk and maintain balance on uneven surfaces.
- Climbing: Must be able to climb ladders to access truck storage as necessary.
Work Conditions
- Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without requiring company sponsorship.
- Personal Protective Equipment: Compliance with safety regulations is mandatory. This includes wearing safety glasses safety boots hard hats and hearing protection as required by the company.
- Travel Requirements: Extensive travel may be necessary as part of the job. Assigned to the system gang employees may be required to travel across Union Pacifics 23-state system at any given time often with short notice.
- Work in Rural Remote Areas: This position involves working in various rural and remote geographic locations.
- Transportation: Applicants must have their own means of transportation.
- Safety Consciousness: A commitment to practicing safe work habits is essential.
- Working with Large Equipment: Job duties will involve working in proximity to large equipment such as railcars locomotives and cranes.
- Work Conditions: Depending on weather business conditions or seniority employment may be seasonal.
- Schedule Flexibility: Availability to work different schedules is required. This may include five 8-hour days with 2 days off four 10-hour days with 3 days off or ten 8-hour days followed by accumulated rest days.
