The Youth Services Clerk position at Salina Public Library provides high-quality friendly and professional this position staff assists patrons with a variety of needs. This requires an individual who is customer service oriented who will actively strive to develop positive ongoing relationships with patrons while identifying opportunities to market library services and actively promote library programs. To be a part of our library team a positive attitude flexibility and willingness to work well with everyone is required.
Reports to: Head of Youth Services
Hours / Schedule: Part-time - evenings and every other weekend (9-14 hours / week)
Typical weeknight hours 5:45-8 p.m.
Typical Saturday hours 9:30 a.m.-3 p.m./11:30 a.m.-5 p.m.
Typical Sunday hours 11:30 a.m.-3 p.m./1:30-5 p.m.
Schedules are adjusted as needed for the Library. Hours scheduled are based upon service levels. Full hours typically are available except during low service time periods.
Starting Pay: $15.18 / hour

Minimum Education: High school diploma or equivalent
Work Experience:Customer service experience preferred but not required. Library experience preferred but not required.
Supervisory Experience:Not required
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
Public Services
- Continuously monitor the youth services desk the self-check station and assist in checking out materials for patrons.
- Have basic math skills and be responsible for conducting payment transactions. A cash drawer must be accurately maintained.
- Issue library cards answer a variety of questions related to patron accounts library collections and events and provide education.
- Support the librarys mission and provide exceptional customer service to both patrons & co-workers.
- Greet and interact with all patrons youth to adult in a friendly and professional manner.
- Maintain a general knowledge of programs and services offered by the wider library.
- Operate a multi-line phone system and professionally interact with patrons via live chat.
- Be able to enforce library policy and follow procedure in a variety of situations including high stress or confrontational interactions.
Professional Growth & Team Collaboration
- Develop and complete a yearly work plan with the department head.
- Communicate clearly accurately and in a timely manner with a diverse set of patrons and co-workers.
- Assist in any area of the library as needed.
- Prepare for and participate in staff and project team meetings.
Administrative & Operational Duties
- Shelve materials accurately and maintain collection shelves as needed.
- Locate and retrieve materials from several locations throughout the library.
- Complete various opening and closing tasks.
- Work honestly and independently under general guidance.
- Be reliable; work scheduled hours; show up ready to work on time and use breaks appropriately.
- Help to maintain organized sanitary and tidy library spaces.
- Maintain library displays and provide an inviting environment.
- Demonstrate professional behavior and comply with library policies and procedures including adhering to library dress code.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS
- Pre-employment drug screen. (post-employment drug screen may also take place)
- Pre-employment background check.
- Basic keyboarding skills.
- The ability to work with a variety of technology equipment and applications including but not limited to Word documents spreadsheets internet browsers email and Google Drive.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS / WORK ENVIRONMENT
Light to moderate physical work.
- Lifting carrying and pushing up to 40 pounds with or without assistance.
- Frequent lifting carrying standing walking bending climbing stairs twisting reaching pulling and pushing.
- Speech and hearing abilities to maintain communication with patrons and co-workers.
- Vision to read and interpret reports written documents and electronic communications.
- Work is primarily indoors with some outdoor work for book drop pickups and other Library event assistance.
