Teacher of the Visually Impaired

Department:

Academics

Responsible To:

Assistant Superintendent of Academics

Qualifications:

Must hold a valid Ohio Teaching License and/or the
appropriate Endorsement and Authorization for the assignment.
Bachelors Degree in education from an accredited college or
university.

Orientation and Mobility Specialist endorsement preferred.

Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board

may find appropriate and acceptable.

Terms of Employment:

Contract salary and benefits per negotiated agreement.

Ranges from 47897 to 88698.

Job Goal:
Student learning and growth are a priority for the Teacher of the Visually Impaired. The position is demanding varied and complex. The TVI must have excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills and be well trained in content knowledge and researched based effective teaching strategies. Responsible for the development implementation coordination assessment and specially designed instruction for blind and visually impaired students between the ages of 3 and 21.

Performance Responsibilities:

  • Provides instruction and case management services for students with visual impairments
  • Interprets communicates and monitors needs to develop a plan (IEP) to facilitate access to the general curriculum and provide modifications or adaptations to the curriculum as appropriate.
  • Coordinates Orientation and Mobility (O & M) services
  • Provides O & M services
  • Coordinates and manages timelines for students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) which may include coordinating scheduling and facilitating multidisciplinary team meetings for students with visual impairments including blindness on assigned caseload.
  • Responsible for all IEP related tasks and paperwork for compliance for assigned caseload.
  • Train educational assistants and teachers or other appropriate personnel to work with the students with visual impairments.
  • Work in multiple sites and must be able to travel to the various locations as needed.
  • Provides home instruction services if appropriate for students who have vision services
  • Instruction of Braille reading and writing
  • Maintains student special education records for assigned caseload.
  • Identifies coordinates schedules and administers functional vision assessments and learning media assessments and communicates and summarizes results. This process may include reviewing/considering vision reports/assessment information from outside providers.
  • Collects relevant data to monitor student progress.
  • Collaborates with classroom teachers other professionals and parents to identify and determine student-programming needs.
  • Delivers vision related services outlined in IEPs.
  • Manages and supports vision assistive technology for students and educators.
  • Instructs and/or consults not only with students but with educational staff parents and appropriate community resources
  • Acquires materials and makes environmental modifications
  • Facilitates student organizational skills.
  • Instructs on keyboarding and other technology a student may be using such as BrailleNote ZoomText JAWS or CCTVs and other low vision aids
  • Supports teams working with students who have multiple handicaps in addition to their visual impairments
  • Interprets eye reports helping parents and IEP team members understand how the eye condition relates to educational environments and student needs
  • Helps students learn appropriate interactions with peers and adults in various social settings
  • Makes extracurricular activities accessible (to the fullest extent possible) for students with visual impairments
  • Ensure the safety of students

Additional Intervention Specialist Performance Responsibilities:

  • Provides a basic core program for students with visual impairments consistent with the state educational code requirements.
  • Works cooperatively with classroom teachers who have students with visual impairments in class interpreting the abilities and disabilities of these students to the entire staff and assisting the student with regular class assignments.
  • Informs parents/guardians of childs progress.
  • Takes responsibility for professional growth and development.
  • Maintains positive rapport with students and demonstrates respect for and interest in all students.
  • Provides substantive specific and timely feedback of student progress to students families and other school personnel while maintaining confidentiality.
  • Uses effective communication strategies with students and families and works effectively with colleagues to examine problems of practice analyze student work and identify targeted strategies.
  • Meets ethical and professional responsibilities with integrity and honesty. The teacher models and upholds district policies and state and federal regulations.
  • Makes provisions for being available to students and parents for education-related purposes outside instructional day when required or requested to do so under reasonable terms.
  • Modifies traditional education curriculum to meet childs needs.
  • Uses various teaching methods to promote learning including intensive individualized instruction problem-solving assignments and small group work.
  • Ensures appropriate accommodations are available in class and when a student needs to take a test.
  • Develops an Individualized Education Program (IEP) for each student.
  • Develops transition plans outlining specific steps to prepare students for middle school or high school or a job or postsecondary study.
  • Reviews the IEP with the students parents school administrators and the students general education teachers.
  • Designs and teaches appropriate curricula.
  • Helps general educators adapt curriculum materials and teaching techniques to meet the needs of students with visual impairments
  • Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Director of Student Services or the Superintendent.

Required knowledge skills and abilities:

  • Maintain appropriate licenses/endorsements and training hours as required.
  • Comply with applicable District state local and federal laws rules and regulations.
  • Adhere to all standards established by the Ohio Department of Education for Licensed Educators.
  • Maintain good attendance and punctuality.
  • Maintain knowledge of academic area teaching methodology and strategies to engage students.
  • Ability to work effectively with others.
  • Ability to communicate ideas and directives clearly and effectively both orally and in writing.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Exhibit professional behavior emotional stability and sound judgement.
  • Maintain confidentiality and respect for confidential information at all times.
  • Establish and maintain cooperative relationships.
  • Interacts in a positive manner with staff students and parents.
  • Refer suspected cases of child abuse immediately to the appropriate child protective services/law enforcement agency as mandated by state law and Board of Education policy.
  • Promote good public relations by personal appearance attitude and conversation.
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect district equipment materials and facilities.
  • Plans purposeful assignments for educational assistants (para-professionals) volunteers and student teachers.
