SUMMARY:
Under general supervision performs routine to complex tasks and duties assigned to classes within the Police Officer series including protection of public health safety and welfare and enforcement of applicable federal state and local laws; learns policies procedures and work methods associated with assigned duties; performs related duties as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
ThePolice Officer I is the entry-level position in this class responsible for the full scope and responsibility of assigned work under direct supervision. This classification is distinguished from the next higher classification of Police Officer II by the latters completion of a one-year probationary period.

ThePolice Officer II is the journey level position in this class responsible for the full scope and responsibility of assigned work under general supervision. This classification is distinguished from the next lower classification of Police Officer I by the completion of a one-year probationary period and from the next higher classification of Police Officer III by the latters responsibility for the more difficult and complex tasks and the performance of the coordination and oversight responsibilities for a designated beat.

Salary:$94003.10-$140829.10 annually DOE

SUPERVISION RECEIVED/EXERCISED:
General supervision is provided by a Police Sergeant or higher level management staff. No supervision is exercised unless serving as a member of the Field Training Program. Police Officer II may provide technical supervision to on police calls in the field to lower level officers.

Education and Experience:
Police Officer I:

Police Officer II:
  • A high school diploma or the equivalent
  • Requires completion of the one year probationary period as a Police Officer I for the City of Oxnard.
License:
Depending on assignment some positions may require:
  • Possession of a valid unrestricted class C California drivers license.
Certification and Other Requirements:
  • Possession of a Basic Certificate issued by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST).
  • Bilingual Spanish/English speaking skills are highly desired.

General Information


Regular and reliable attendance effective communication skills and development of effective working relationships are requirements of all positions.

City staff may be required to play an active role in the event of an emergency which may include changes in responsibilities and working hours.

The list of qualified candidates that is established from this recruitment may be used to fill other full-time part-time and temporary assignments as vacancies arise.

This position requires a twelve (12) month probationary period.

Employees are required to participate in the Citys direct deposit plan and are paid on a bi-weekly basis.

Pursuant to California Government Code Section 3100 all public Employees are required to serve as disaster service workers subject to such disaster service activities as may be assigned to them.
