Job Description

The Wastewater Technical Advisor is responsible for guiding the statewide training and technical assistance program for wastewater treatment system operators and managers. This position applies professional operator experience and inspection analysis to provide expert technical assistance and direction to operators on process control at treatment facilities. Responsibilities include: Advising and developing Montanas wastewater operator certification training program and providing certification training and technical education for wastewater operators to meet certification requirements; Conducting comprehensive performance evaluations and operation and maintenance inspections of both permitted and unpermitted facilities to identify systems that are causing or may cause pollution to state waters; Providing technical expertise to optimize system performance and maximize the efficiency of pollutant removal and; Reviewing plans and specifications for Wastewater Treatment Facilities (WWTFs) for operability safety and technological feasibility to meet environmental standards.

Work with community members and other stakeholders to identify necessary programs and services.
Review interpret and monitor compliance to guidelines laws and regulations.
May coordinate activities of program committees or other groups and plan procedures.
Create and develops policies or program guidelines

Physical and Environmental Considerations:
The position may spend significant amounts of time indoors in a dynamic office environment which can regularly include auditory distractions. The position may be required to operate a personal computer and general office equipment to complete essential functions which can lead to potential challenges with eyestrain poor ergonomics and repetitive motion impacts.
The field duties may require the position to visually evaluate a site requiring the position to traverse uneven surfaces or climb ladders. The position may also bend crouch kneel or twist in performing repetitive work such as sample collection. The position may be required to lift and carry equipment. Duties are regularly performed in varying climatic conditions. The duties may require safety equipment when working on sites with hazards or contaminants. The position may involve unaccompanied travel to various sites across Montana.

Detailed Minimum Qualifications:
Bachelors degree preferably in a science-based discipline or related field.
Two years of job-related experience in a mechanical wastewater treatment facility or a lagoon treatment facility as a certified operator.
Preferred experience in training other operators in the various aspects of operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment facilities.
Current wastewater operator certification is required.
Current valid Drivers License and clean driving record in accordance with State of Montana Vehicle Use Policy
Other combinations of education and experience may be accepted on a case-by-case basis.
