Job Duties

Applyingequity racial and social justice principles is a daily responsibility and a foundational expectation for all King County this role you will apply equity and social justice principles that exemplify shared values behaviors and practices to all aspects of the work.

  • Serve as a consistent and visible County presence within assigned unincorporated areas of King County.
  • Build and maintain trusting long-term relationships with a broad range of community stakeholders.
  • Organize and actively participate in town halls listening sessions and service fairs as appropriate.
  • Assist residents in navigating King County systems programs and services to ensure equitable access.
  • Track constituent concerns and coordinate follow-up with the appropriate departments or agencies.
  • Provide strategic input to inform internal and external initiatives aligned with community priorities.
  • Maintain centralized organized records of community engagement activities and outcomes.
  • Contribute to written reports and other documentation related to Community Service Areas (CSAs).
  • Lead or support issue-specific projects that respond to the expressed priorities of the community.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support DLS and County goals.

Experience Qualifications Knowledge Skills

  • Bachelors degree in Public Administration Social Work Community Development or a closely related field; or an equivalent combination of education professional background and/or lived experience.
  • Demonstrated experience working effectively with diverse communities across cultural and demographic lines.
  • Proven commitment to racial equity and social justice in both policy and practice.
  • Strong facilitation and interpersonal communication skills with the ability to engage with varied audiences.
  • Proficiency in conflict resolution and collaborative problem-solving particularly in community contexts.
  • Ability to prioritize competing tasks manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines in a fast-paced dynamic environment.
  • Comfortable navigating ambiguity shifting priorities and emotionally charged environments while maintaining composure and focus on community outcomes.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Previous experience in local government community engagement or grassroots organizing.
  • Familiarity with the communities challenges and opportunities present in unincorporated King County.
  • Working knowledge of public infrastructure zoning processes or participatory budgeting frameworks.
  • Experience using trauma-informed approaches in community settings.

Supplemental Information

INTERVIEW SCHEDULE:Those applicants who pass the initial screening will be invited to participate in a panel interview the week of September 15th.

WHO MAY APPLY:This recruitment is open to all qualified applicants and may be used to fill current and or/future career service term-limited temporary short-term temporary and or/special duty positions over the next six months.

Special duty opportunities are open only to current King County career service employees who have completed their initial probation. Special duty applicants must have approval from their current supervisor to accept an assignment. Current employees selected for special duty will be compensated based upon the provisions of the collective bargaining agreement King County Personnel Guidelines or Coalition Labor Agreement for their base assignment.

WORK SCHEDULE:The work week is normally Monday through Friday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. but may at times require work outside of normal business hours. This position is Exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act and is not eligible for overtime pay.

EMERGENCY DESIGNATION STATUS:This position has been designatedNon-Mission Critical - Employees who staff county functions or services that may be delayed suspended or diverted in an emergency while essential functions are prioritized Mission Critical.

UNION MEMBERSHIP:This position is non-represented.

REMOTE & ONSITE WORK:The work associated with this position will be performed through a combination of remote and onsite work. The successful candidate may be expected to report to the office for onsite work typically 5 times per week. The frequency of onsite work may vary based on business or operational needs and be adjusted accordingly. The primary onsite location is King Street Center 201 S. Jackson St Seattle WA 98104. Employees must reside in Washington state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.
King County has a robust collection oftools and resourcesto support working remotely. The individual selected for this opportunity will join an innovative and progressive team that is redefining how we work as we transition to the departments hybrid environment. Employees will be provided with a County-issued laptop and must maintain a home workspace with an internet connection where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours.
