Job Description

Position Summary

The GMAW Weld Technician & Trainer is responsible for executing high-quality gas metal arc welds training personnel in GMAW techniques and collaborating with engineering teams to optimize welding processes. This role focuses on improving cycle time reducing non-value-added activities and ensuring consistent weld quality across production. This trainer will primarily support our Assembly line but will need to assist in other departments if needed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Technical Welding
    • Perform GMAW welding on various metals including carbon steel stainless steel and aluminum.
    • Set up and calibrate welding equipment for optimal performance.
    • Conduct weld inspections and ensure compliance with AWS and internal quality standards.
  • Training & Development
    • Develop and deliver hands-on training programs for new and existing welders.
    • Create instructional materials and standard operating procedures (SOPs).
    • Mentor team members on safety technique and equipment maintenance.
    • Work with fitters to learn fitter best practices.
  • Process Optimization
    • Partner with engineering to analyze weld sequences and identify bottlenecks.
    • Recommend and implement changes to reduce cycle time and eliminate non-value-added steps.
    • Support continuous improvement initiatives using lean manufacturing principles.
  • Quality & Compliance
    • Conduct root cause analysis on weld defects and implement corrective actions.
    • Maintain documentation for weld procedures training records and process changes.
    • Ensure adherence to safety protocols and regulatory requirements.

Qualifications

  • Proven experience in GMAW welding in a production or fabrication environment.
  • Strong understanding of welding metallurgy shielding gases and transfer modes (e.g. short circuit spray).
  • Familiarity with lean tools such as 5S Kaizen and value stream mapping.
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills for training and cross-functional collaboration.
  • AWS certification preferred; technical diploma or equivalent experience required.
    • If there is no certification the candidate will need 12-14 years of welding experience.
  • 12-14 years of Ox Bodies fitter experience.
