Department Description:

The purpose of the Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) is to implement programs that protect the health and safety of campus personnel and the environment in accordance with regulatory code.

Detailed Description:

Assists in the design and implementation of the Environmental Health and Safety program for the entire campus and surrounding communities. Performs skilled-level work throughout the full spectrum of environmental health and safety practices as directed by the Director of Environmental Health and Safety. Assists in the compliant implementation of City County State and Federal regulations. Conducts and documents inspections on Fire safety equipment eyewash stations and safety showers laboratory safety general building occupancy and hazardous waste collection storage and disposal. Will provide safety training as mandated in a variety of subject matters including but not limited to new employee orientation hazardous waste handling ergonomics environmental compliance confined space entry fall protection and numerous safety trainings on a variety of topics for Facilities Management staff. Provides follow-up investigation on incidents and injuries including developing corrective action plans and tracking items to closure. Serves as a member of the Emergency Preparedness team and other safety related committees. Works closely with Public Safety and other campus colleagues.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Inspect and accurately maintain current documentation related to the status of fire safety equipment fire safety systems emergency showers and eyewash stations.
  • Inspect and report building safety hazards and recommend appropriate corrective action.
  • Routinely audit campus facilities and work processes assuring compliance with all pertinent environmental health and safety policies rules and regulations.
  • Inspect and document laboratory fume hood testing (annually).
  • Investigate and report safety hazards/chemical spills and recommend appropriate corrective action.
  • Develop and conduct training related to a new employee general safety and injury/illness prevention programs.
  • Investigate workplace accidents and provide recommendations for corrective action.
  • Maintain update and document safety programs including but not limited to confined space entry lock out/tag out forklift operation fall protection working at heights etc.
  • Maintain all requisite records and reports as directed by the Director of Environmental Health and Safety.
  • Maintain pressure vessel inventory and permits.
  • Perform ergonomic evaluations for office and field personnel including written recommendations that can lessen the likelihood and reduce the incidence of injury.
  • Participate in campus disaster/emergency preparedness.
  • Maintain current and accurate library (physical and electronic) of Safety Data Sheet (SDS) information and inventory of all chemicals used or stored on campus.
  • Audit disposal of Hazardous Materials
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Environmental Health and Safety and/or the Assistant Vice President for Facilities Management

Degree Verification Requirement: Persons offered employment in this position will be required to provide official education transcripts for degree verification purposes.

Job Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A Bachelors degree in an appropriate scientific or public health field is strongly preferred along with minimum two years professional experience in a comprehensive environmental health and safety program or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Commensurate and extensive credentials training and experience in a comprehensive environmental health and safety program may be substituted in lieu of the Bachelors degree requirement
  • General knowledge of fire and life safety codes and requirements
  • General knowledge of building codes and occupancy requirements
  • General knowledge of applicable local state and federal environmental health and safety regulations and policies
  • General knowledge of environmental health and safety principles and practices
  • High interpersonal skill to communicate effectively in writing in-person and over the telephone to a diverse audience including students faculty and staff
  • Knowledge of and experience in ergonomic principles and best practices
  • Ability to exercise good judgment in effective time-management skills in the prioritization and proper execution of work when there are multiple tasks and competing priorities

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Laboratory experience specifically in a university setting preferred
  • Safety Management Specialist (SMS) Certification preferred
  • Associate Safety Professional (ASP) Certification preferred
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish preferred

  • Ability to develop and conduct training programs
  • Possess good organizational skills
  • Ability to meet and work effectively with students faculty staff and other outside agency professionals and possess strong team working skills
  • Read understand and express oneself clearly and effectively in written and oral form
  • Knowledge of ergonomic principles and control measures.
  • Working knowledge of and/or possess the aptitude to learn National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Codes and Standards California Division of Occupational Safety and Health Administration (Cal-OSHA) standards and enforcement Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) laws and regulations California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) and other applicable regulations.
  • Ability to collect assess and interpret date in order to effectively and accurately report on metrics trends statistics etc.
  • Possess excellent human relations skills

Certificates Licenses Registrations:

  • Valid CA drivers license

$23.20 - $31.32 per hour; Excellent Benefits
