Job Description

Job Goal: The Theater Technician is responsible for preparing and operating all technical aspects of events and performances held within the Wellesley Public Schools. Performance venues include but are not limited to the Auditorium Little Theatre and performing arts classrooms at both the high school and middle school. Wellesley Public Schools community affiliates include town departments parent/caregiver support organizations Wellesley Education Foundation and other town-sponsored organizations

Performance Responsibilities:

  • Setting up technical needs (microphones acoustic shell risers monitors etc.) for a variety of school and school-affiliated community events. Events include but are not limited to concerts meetings awards ceremonies special events and others as directed by the Director of Performing Arts
  • Programming cues for lights and sound at above events
  • Operating the sound and light boards during technical rehearsals and performances
  • Train and supervise students performing arts sta school and community

organizations in the safe and correct use of stage lighting and sound equipment

  • Ensuring the safe use and storage of sensitive technical theatre equipment during and after events
  • Reporting maintenance needs to the auditorium manager and Director of Performing Arts
  • Collaborating with teachers directors members of production teams performing arts leadership administrative staff and parent/caregiver volunteers
  • Communicating with a variety of stakeholders to determine and meet the various technical needs of these events
  • Designing sound lights and sets in collaboration with drama director(s) for WPS performances
  • Supervising the use of scene shop power and hand tools and training students and sta on

proper usage and maintaining the cleanliness and organization of the space

  • Participating in strike and equipment breakdown after events load in and load out of sets for off-site festival performances and transporting sets in a district-rented vehicle upon request
  • Participation in technical meetings/production team meetings
  • Providing for the needs of outside rentals in Performing Arts spaces including but not limited to training and being present to operate equipment at any time when technical expertise is required and all other responsibilities as directed by the Director of Performing Arts (renters not affiliated with WPS will be billed for additional compensation)

The WPS Performing Arts department hopes to hire a single individual for venues and events at Wellesley Middle School and another individual for venues and events at Wellesley High School. The Middle School position is expected to work a total of475hours across the school year; the High School position is expected to work a total of 475 hours across the school year. ThePerforming Arts department is also open to hiring multiple people to share these roles in a different manner provided all events can be covered.

Work Year/Work Day: Due to the varying frequency and duration of performances hours will vary.

Salary/Benefits: The position will be compensated on an hourly basis. Rate is included in Appendix B of the WEA agreements.

Qualifications:

  • Degree in Technical Theatre or Stage Management and/or a minimum of three years technical experience in performing arts preferred
  • OSHA Certification (OSHA 10 Construction or General Industry)
  • Experience and expertise in sound design lighting design and set constructions
  • Knowledge of sensitive technical theatre equipment their safe use and their maintenance
  • Ability to conduct sound checks equalize audio levels and achieve a balanced sound throughout the performance space
  • Experience in the safe construction of sets safe operation of fly systems rigging fire curtain stage dressing etc.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and work both independently and collaboratively to solve unexpected problems
  • Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check (C.O.R.I.) Sexual Offender Record Check (S.O.R.I) and fingerprints
  • Passion for working with children/students
  • Basic knowledge of child growth and development
  • Knowledge of basic behavioral strategies
  • Knowledge of basic learning strategies
  • A strong commitment to helping a wide variety of culturally diverse students achieve their full potential

The employee is required to have the cognitive ability and focus to manage multiple detailed tasks at once with frequent interruptions.
