Job Description

JOB SUMMARY
A Mount Vernon Schools coach inspires student athletes by creating and nurturing an environment where all students belong and incorporates high expectations rigor good sportsmanship team building love of the sport and safety. Desired applicants have experience with and/or a commitment to the success with migrant bilingual and multilingual students. Preferred applicants reflect the diverse backgrounds and experiences of our student populations. Coaching is provided that reflects the Mount Vernon School Districts commitment to equity and inclusion the districts curriculum and recognized best practices. Mount Vernon Schools coaches kindle excitement and actively engage students in play.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Successful head and/or varsity assistant coaching experience at high school or college level
  • Experience and commitment building a program that includes managing the JV and C Teams that build a consistent positive culture and skill set that supports the varsity program
  • Demonstrated compassion to cultural developmental religious and ethnic diversity of students and community and a passion for equity and inclusion
  • Demonstrated ability to connect with students staff and community members in a mutually respectful supportive and accessible manner
  • Demonstrated awareness of equity; specifically focused on ways that race language gender and disability intersect in our activity and athletic access and participation
  • Demonstrated knowledge and skill in fundamental wrestling techniques and strategies
  • Demonstrated the ability to work productively and collaboratively with assistant coaches
  • Demonstrated the ability to motivate student athletes in a positive and productive manner to assure the full development of their academic personal and athletic potential
  • Demonstrated the use of positive communication techniques in working with student athletes parents and staff in the development of a wrestling program
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly and effectively in both written and verbal form
  • Demonstrated skill in athletic program development and evaluation
  • Demonstrated organizational skills and the ability to motivate others
  • Other desired attributes: vigor flexibility enthusiasm and professional integrity
  • Must hold or be able to obtain a valid CPR and First Aid Card
  • Must be able to meet all WIAA coaching standards
  • Be a high school graduate (or equivalent)

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Plan implement and develop an effective wrestling program that is consistent with building district curriculum/programs and WIAA
  • Document and maintain written records of program plans safety lessons practice schedules and student athlete participation and attendance
  • Lead coach and engage all student athletes regardless of background or ability
  • Foster and maintain a safe positive learning environment and practice good stewardship of athletic equipment fields and athletic buildings
  • Process information to make sound judgments and decisions
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with a variety of staff and stakeholders
  • Coach individual participants in the skills necessary for excellent achievement in wrestling
  • Develop practice plans that document the teaching of key safety skills
  • Provide supervision of athletes on the field bus locker rooms weight room and any other practice game place or team-related activities while responsible for athletes
  • Plan and schedule a regular program of practice in season
  • Work closely with the athletic coordinator in scheduling interscholastic contests
  • Recommend purchase of equipment supplies and uniforms as appropriate
  • Require necessary attendance forms insurance records physical examination clearance etc. prior to and during the season
  • Establish performance criteria for eligibility in interscholastic competition
  • Enforce discipline and good sportsmanship behavior at all times
  • Supervise and directs assistant coaches in the performance of their duties
  • Emphasize ethical and exemplary conduct off and on the field for coaches and players
  • Organize practice sessions that are stimulating and instructive
  • Prepare the athletes both physically and mentally to participate in athletic contests
  • Maintain consistent attendance and conform to regular work hours specified under contract
  • Possess positive human relations skills

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Duties are normally performed in a school environment or outdoors. Duties may be occasionally performed on field trips away from school. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Must have the ability to sit and stand for extended periods of time; exhibit manual dexterity to use a phone see and read a computer screen and printed material with or without vision aids; hear and understand speech at normal levels outdoors and on the telephone; speak in audible tones so that others may understand clearly; physical agility to lift up to 25 pounds to shoulder height and 50 pounds to waist height; and to bend to stoop to sit on the floor to climb stairs to walk and to reach overhead.
