SUMMARY: The Omaha Language and Culture Department Teacher/Speaker assists in the development of the Umoho Culture and Language Preservation Department and facilitates the Umoho language activities and events by performing a variety of language development tasks. Incumbent will work in various functional areas within the department therefore specific duties may vary according to assignments.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES and/or RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
- Certified speaking or teaching ability (at first opportunity when certification committee is available if not already certified).
- Good relationships with many or most other Elder Speakers and Active Listeners.
- Excellent verbal communications skills.
- Interest in the work of younger Department staff and ability to help them immerse Umoho language into their different tasks and functions.
- Demonstrated ability to plan invite delegate lead or otherwise be involved in community events including inviting cooks couples in charge MCs being in charge of honoraria taking Department staff out to make house calls etc. depending on nature of event.
- Willingness to work with Department staff and language teachers to develop language activities for community members who attend community events.
- Interest in learning different teaching methods and ability to periodically travel to attend immersion teaching workshops out of state.
- Willingness to offer language and culture teachings regularly in person online and at large annual events such as the Umoho and Poka Gathering and the Dhegiha Gathering.
- Ability to model good language use and correct mistaken language use in an encouraging way and willingness to encourage all Department staff to practice more and more and use English less and less.
- Performs other duties as assigned.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
- Experience working with Umoho language teachers and speakers (Teaching experience and speaking ability preferred but not required).
- Experience in sharing traditional Umoho values traditions stories history etc.
CERTIFICATES LICENSES and/or REGISTRATIONS:
- Must pass background check and pre-employment drug screen.
KNOWLEDGE SKILLS and/or ABILITIES:
- Ability to regularly engage with all language stakeholders and to build consensus.
- Ability to work closely with other Elders and speakers of Umoho language in developing activities events materials lesson plans etc.
- Ability to work independently but also in a Team environment.
- Ability to be in charge of community-based activities and events.
- Displays quality verbal communications skills.
- Willingness to develop personal skills in utilizing Microsoft Office Suite or related software.
- Ability to work online with developed Umoho language lessons.
- Willingness to be recorded in order to preserve their knowledge and experience.
