The Lab Technician and Technical Instructor position supports students faculty and initiatives within the School of Architecture and Design in the following ways:
Overseeing activity in design prototyping lab spaces to foster a safe and inclusive learning environment;
Providing student staff and faculty lab users with formal technical instruction on equipment and fabrication methods related to design prototyping;
Offering continued mentorship troubleshooting and fabrication guidance for lab users working on a wide range of design prototyping projects;
Maintaining equipment calibration performing preventative maintenance and performing or coordinating repair of lab equipment;
Assisting with departmental special projects and accreditation preparation;
The Lab Technician and Technical Instructor is a member of a collaborative team of technical staff and reports to the Director of Labs.
Essential Functions:
Oversee safe use: Oversee the use of the School of Architecture and Designs labs and maintain a safe inclusive learning environment. Intervene whenever unsafe practices are observed and report such incidents to the Director of Labs Public Safety and Environmental Health and Safety when .

Provide equipment and fabrication method instruction: Provide student staff and faculty lab users with equipment and fabrication method instruction. Maintain records of user instruction. Provide continued support troubleshooting and fabrication guidance to student staff and faculty users.

Maintain lab spaces and equipment: Maintain equipment calibration and perform routine preventative maintenance. Perform or coordinate repair of lab equipment. Maintain organization cleanliness and general upkeep of lab spaces. submit maintenance work orders and coordinate with Facilities when necessary.

Maintain inventory of supplies and purchasing: Maintain inventory of supplies and consumables. Purchase replacements as necessary.

Assist with School of Architecture and Design special projects: Assist SoAD administrative staff with various project-based work. Assist with ongoing development of SoADs Labs and lab-related capital projects. Assist in coordination of beginning-of-semester studio setup. Assist with preparation for events such as Wentworth Open House and exhibitions of student work end-of-semester reviews.

Minimum Requirements:
A minimum of a bachelors degree in architecture design engineering or a related field.
Three years of combined experience (a) working in fabrication spaces and/or (b) supporting use of academic maker or technical labs.
Minimum Qualifications:

Excellent written verbal and visual communication skills.
Demonstrated ability to work both independently and collaboratively as part of a cross-functional team.
Demonstrated commitment to fostering a safe inclusive and collaborative learning environment.
Technical
Practical experience with:
Physical model-making and rapid prototyping using both digital and traditional fabrication tools and methods;
Foundational woodworking;
Additive manufacturing technologies e.g. FDM SLA and LDM and associated equipment operation;
CAD/CAM workflows and CNC equipment operation.
Preferred Qualifications:
Technical
Practical experience with:
Maintenance calibration and troubleshooting of additive manufacturing equipment;
Maintenance calibration and troubleshooting of CNC equipment;
studio photography;
Operating and programming industrial robots;
XR (extended reality) technologies as they relate to design development and visualization;
Physical computing;

The School of Architecture and Design Labs (SoAD Labs) at Wentworth is a student-centered technological hub dedicated to experimentation realization and communication of design ideas. The Labs are an extension of the design studio and are central to our students design process and experience at Wentworth.
