Mandate

The Chief News Editor for the Toronto region is responsible for the planning direction organization production and distribution of content across all platforms (Radio Television Digital).

To develop his or her sector he or she manages the human physical and financial resources assigned to it in order to meet the objectives of the region and the regional services. Under the authority of management the Chief News Editor works closely with all members of the management team and ensures the application of journalistic standards and practices throughout the sector.

The Chief News Editor is a leader with strong strategic thinking a clear global vision and a high degree of creativity. He or she is responsible for the ongoing development of staff by fostering engagement and promoting inclusion. He or she thrives in a rapidly evolving work environment guided by the core values of the public broadcaster.

Key responsibilities:

  • Define the editorial vision and participate in the planning of overall strategic objectives particularly those related to news editorial direction digital impact journalism and continuous news coverage.

  • Advise the Regional Director on priority actions to meet established objectives and ensure their implementation.

  • Participate in audience needs analysis and propose relevant content to help achieve strategic goals.

  • Coordinate the human and administrative resources required to produce content across all platforms (digital social media radio television newscasts).

  • Motivate and support team leaders to encourage the development of meaningful stories for citizens whether in continuous news impact journalism or social cultural or sports programming.

  • Propose and oversee the execution of special news projects (special TV/radio programs podcasts digital stories documentaries etc.).

  • Identify succession planning needs and participate in selection committees for hiring or delegate a representative.

  • Contribute to team development and participate in the performance management process; propose actions to improve performance and skills development when needed.

  • Represent station management at external events when delegated.

  • Sit on various local regional and national committees as required.

  • Maintain connections with other regional stations to maximize efficiency and synergy opportunities.

  • Assess operational and capital budget needs and propose solutions to management. Monitor expenses while respecting allocated budgets. Suggest measures aligned with programming and production requirements.

  • Respond to complaints in collaboration with legal services and address editorial questions.

  • Be available to respond to emergencies during evenings and weekends if needed.

  • Carry out any other tasks assigned by management.

Your profile:

  • Bachelors degree or equivalent

  • Ten (10) years of journalism experience and three (3) years in a management or leadership role

  • Excellent knowledge of journalistic processes information gathering methods and production for television radio and online platforms

  • Familiarity with the Radio-Canada production environment

  • Recognized journalistic judgment and instinct

  • Strong communication skills and a solid understanding of media-specific communication principles

  • Creativity boldness and agility in developing innovative solutions evaluating work methods and creating new processes

  • Knowledge of effective management and change management techniques

  • Proven positive collaborative and inclusive leadership skills to motivate and inspire creative and engaged teams

  • Demonstrated ability to support employee development and provide constructive empathetic feedback

  • Ability to manage confidential matters with discretion

  • Capacity for both lateral and linear thinking to manage a wide range of situations daily

  • Strong teamwork clear vision communication active listening and transparency

  • Broad general knowledge and strong awareness of current affairs

  • Proficiency in French

  • Very good knowledge of English

  • Familiarity with the Corporations Journalistic Standards and Practices
