Job Description
We are looking for an exceptional Network Development Engineer (NDE) to join us to define and build the next generation of the AWS Direct Connect service. This position will design and invent the future of the network underlying our AWS Direct Connect service.
First a bit of background:
Amazon Web Services (AWS) offers a broad set of global compute storage database analytics application and networking services that help organizations move faster lower IT costs and scale applications. Our services are trusted by the largest enterprises and the hottest startups to power a wide variety of workloads.
The AWS Direct Connect team delivers solutions that make it easy for customers to establish a dedicated network connection from their premises to the AWS cloud. These connections help to reduce network costs increase bandwidth throughput and provide a more consistent network experience than Internet-based connections. Direct Connect is currently available in more than 60 locations located in 22 countries.
For this role we are seeking a Network Development Engineer to work in our Direct Connect Network Engineering organization. This team is responsible for designing all aspects of the global network fabric for the AWS Direct Connect service. Engineers in this organization define the platforms topologies routing architectures and software control systems for these networks. Engineers on this team make day-to-day and strategic decisions that carry a huge amount of responsibility and impact. If youre up the challenge wed love to hear from you!
We are inventing the networks of the future so our engineers require a deep background in network hardware routing protocols and designing large scale networks. The ideal candidate for this team would have a knowledge of ASICs optics and router system design as well as extensive experience designing and implementing routings protocols such BGP and OSPF. Were interested in engineers with experience having designed operated and implemented networks of large scale. Were looking for those who have pushed platforms and protocols to their limits.
In addition to fundamental Networking skills our engineers must have Linux experience and background in network automation. SDN is a reality at Amazon and our networks are designed to be fully managed and operated via software systems. Some proficiency in programming is required.
Key job responsibilities
Network Development Engineers design build and maintain our high quality network to meet our high bar of scale reliability performance and maintainability.
Design and implement our network infrastructure
Operate and troubleshoot network routing interconnectivity platforms performance and configurations issues; including necessary low level application interaction Unix systems and new age networking software tools
Maintain standards across the networking toolset and ensure that we are fully compliant to those standards and policies
Deliver simple sustainable and repeatable solutions and processes
Create and review documentation and process regarding network implementation/deployments recurring issues new standard operating procedures knowledge transfer material etc.

On a given day our engineers may define routing behavior for new features test changes before production release dive deep to understand issues or propose ideas to make our network and services more reliable and easier to manage.

- 4 years of major internet routing protocols experience
- 4 years of working in a Linux/Unix environment experience
- 1 years of automation scripting using Python Bash Shell and/or Perl experience
