The salary range for this position is $102060 to $113443 depending on the successful candidates years of teaching experience at the college level. The position comes with generous benefits ( including medical dental vision and life insurance and University contributions toward retirement. Recognizing the high cost of housing in the local area there are two University housing assistance programs: Rental assistance to ease the transition into the local housing market and housing purchase assistance for tenure-stream faculty.

PURPOSE:
The Department of Physics and Engineering Physics at Santa Clara University a Jesuit Catholic university seeks a pool of applicants for two new tenure-track Assistant Professor positions in experimental and computational physics beginning September 1 2026. SCU is a welcoming and inclusive community of teaching scholars whose work is grounded in the universitys fundamental values. The university draws on the many resources of the greater Bay Area including Silicon Valley where we are located. The Department of Physics and Engineering Physics offers distinct B.S. degrees in physics and engineering physics and graduates about 10-15 majors each year. We seek excellent dynamic physicists who would work on nationally-fundable research projects in experimental or computational physics. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in physics or a closely related field as well as post-doctoral research experience. The successful candidates must have the demonstrated ability to teach courses across the undergraduate physics curriculum must be willing to contribute in service commensurate to rank and must demonstrate a strong commitment to establishing and sustaining an externally-fundable research program that can actively involve undergraduates. The Department of Physics and Engineering Physics is housed in the Sobrato Center for Discovery and Innovation (SCDI) a state-of-the-art teaching and /research facility.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Candidates are required to have a Ph.D. in physics or a closely related field as well as postdoctoral research and some teaching experience. The successful candidates must be excellent physicists self-starters clear communicators and talented teachers who can demonstrate the ability to teach effectively and inclusively at the undergraduate level. The new hires must be able to work comfortably and effectively in a collaborative and diverse academic environment. They must be able to build and sustain an active research program that will attract external funding and that can involve undergraduate students. The successful candidates will be expected to balance teaching scholarship and service responsibilities as a member of the Department and the broader community.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
Physics tenure track faculty members are expected to be collegial teaching-scholars who can successfully balance a commitment to both quality teaching and a sustained research program that typically involves undergraduates. The successful candidates will also be expected to contribute service to the department college and/or university as appropriate to rank. This is an in-person position. More specifically duties include but are not limited to:
TEACHING
1. Teach lower- and upper-division courses in the major and university core curriculum as assigned by the chair. SCU is on the quarter system and a typical load is two courses per quarter. Teaching responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:
(a) Conducting and appearing at all assigned class meetings in a timely and prepared manner that demonstrates a command of the discipline and skill in presenting it effectively.
(b) Assigning and evaluating written work projects and exams that align with course or core learning objectives and providing timely feedback to students.
(c) Holding weekly office hours at times reasonably convenient to students.
(d) Assigning and submitting student grades that are appropriate accurate and fair measures of student performance to the Office of the Registrar by the designated deadline.
(e) Administering numerical and narrative evaluations in each section for all courses.
2. Develop and teach courses that contribute to curriculum development in the relevant degree program and/or the university core. Faculty teaching university core courses should follow an approved syllabus or work with the chair to design an appropriate syllabus for submission for approval from the relevant Faculty Core Curriculum Committee.
3. Participate in assessment of student learning for courses in the department.
4. Provide informed advice and mentoring to undergraduate students.
5. Fulfill other instructional or academic duties as may be assigned by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences or by the Physics Department Chair.

RESEARCH
Develop a sustained research program at SCU as per the department scholarship standards that will contribute to the inquisitive climate in the department result in the publication of peer-reviewed papers and attract external funding. Strong preference will be given to candidates with a research program that can accommodate participation of undergraduates.
SERVICE
Provide effective service to the Department of Physics and Engineering Physics the College the University and profession through contributions other than teaching and scholarship such as service on committees participation in professional organizations and activities and community service performed by virtue of professional expertise or association with the university as appropriate to rank and experience.
