Job Description

POSITION DESCRIPTION

Elementary STEAM Teacher

Grandy Primary & Camden Intermediate Schools

Reports to: Principal

Purpose: The Elementary STEAM Teacher role involves providing integrated cross-curricular instruction to elementary school students aiming to foster interest in science technology engineering arts and mathematics and inspire future careers in these fields. The ultimate goal is to create a stronger STEAM program that challenges students to think critically. STEAM teacher provides daily instruction related to STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Arts and Math) for students in grades K-5.



Minimum Training and Experience

Bachelors degree in education or in a related area that will qualify for licensure as a teacher by the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.

  • Strong background in science technology and/or mathematics is preferred.
  • Classroom teaching experience is preferred.



Job Responsibilities and Duties

  • Plans and implements a program of instruction that adheres to district philosophy goals and objectives outlined in the North Carolina Standards.
  • Makes purposeful and appropriate lesson plans that provide for effective teaching strategies and maximize time on task.
  • Plans and implements a program of study designed to meet the individual needs of students.
  • Encourages student enthusiasm for learning and the development of good study habits.
  • Delivers STEAM-oriented instruction in a relevant and innovative setting.
  • Consistently uses hands-on exploratory practices with students.
  • Provides K-5 students with activities in which students must think through and solve problems.
  • Teaches lessons appropriate to the maturity and interests of K-5 students.
  • Establishes clear objectives for all lessons units and projects and communicates them to students.
  • Employs a variety of instructional techniques that guide the learning process towards academic achievement and curriculum goals.
  • Helps promote understanding of contributions to STEAM innovation and fields of study.
  • Fosters discovery and problem-solving skills along with an inquiry-based approach through real-world hands-on tasks.
  • Keeps up-to-date in knowledge of subject matter and learning theory and shares this knowledge for continual improvement of the schools curriculum.
  • Assists in the ongoing curriculum revision process.
  • Creates a yearly scope and sequence as well as individualized lesson plans for students in STEAM content areas based upon state standards and Next Generation Science Standards.
  • Creates and updates the STEAM curriculum.
  • Promotes the integration of STEAM concepts through experiential learning opportunities.
  • Models the integration of science technology engineering and mathematics in all curriculum areas and grade levels.
  • Collaborates with teachers instructional technology facilitator and library media coordinator to develop and implement STEAM-related activities to support and integrate classroom instruction.
  • Works with principals subject matter specialists and teachers to use test data to improve curriculum content and delivery.
  • Develops and consistently applies reasonable rules of classroom behavior and appropriate classroom management techniques in accordance with district and school guidelines.
  • Takes necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students equipment materials and facilities.
  • Shares responsibility for the supervision of students in all areas of the school during the school day.
  • Provides for the supervision of assigned students when circumstances require a brief absence.
  • Maintains a safe and orderly classroom environment.
  • Manages the materials and resources for the STEAM program and lab.
  • Maintains the site STEAM lab/maker space with instructional materials.
  • Meets with the building principal to discuss STEAM services and plan related initiatives.
  • Attends all staff department and committee meetings as required.
  • Continues professional growth through attendance at workshops seminars conferences and/or advanced coursework.
  • Attends professional development and training related to STEAM programs and methodologies staying abreast of current research.
  • Provides progress and other reports as required.
  • Makes appropriate adjustments in the instructional program as required.
  • Respects the confidentiality of records and information regarding students parents and teachers.
  • Utilizes multiple instructional technologies to engage students and enhance instruction.
  • Implements best practices for the districts 1:1 initiative related to technology use.
  • Assists with Science Fair Science Olympiad and Parent Night events.
  • Organizes and coordinates STEAM-related events competitions and community partnerships to enhance student learning experiences.
  • Maintains regular and consistent attendance and punctuality.
  • Upholds and enforces Board of Education policy administrative procedures and school rules and regulations.
  • Maintains appropriate work habits including appropriate use of conference and planning time.
  • Plans and prescribes purposeful assignments for teacher assistants tutors and volunteers as needed.
  • Performs related duties as assigned by the Principal and Superintendent.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Major Function: Management of Instructional Time

The teacher has materials supplies and equipment for each lesson ready at the start of each instructional activity starts instruction quickly gets students on task quickly at the beginning of each lesson and maintains a high level of student time on task.

Major Function: Management of Student Behavior

The teacher has established a set of rules and procedures that govern the handling of routine administrative matters; has established a set of rules and guidelines that govern student verbal participation and talk during different types of activities; has established a set of rules and procedures that govern student movement in the classroom during various types of instructional and non-instructional activities; frequently monitors the behavior of all students; stops inappropriate behavior promptly and consistently yet maintains the dignity of the student.

Major Function: Instructional Presentation

The teacher begins lesson or instructional activity with a review of previous materials; introduces the lesson or instructional activity and specific learning objectives when appropriate; speaks fluently and precisely; presents the lesson or instructional activity using concepts and language understandable to the students; provides relevant examples and demonstrations to illustrate ideas and skills; assigns tasks that students handle with a high rate of success; asks appropriate levels of questions that students handle with a high rate of success; conducts lesson or instructional activity at a brisk pace slowing presentations when necessary for student understanding but avoiding slowdowns; makes transitions between lessons and between instructional activities within lessons efficiently and smoothly; makes sure that the assignment is clear; summarizes the main point(s) of the lesson at the end of the lesson or instructional activity.

Minimum Qualifications or Standards Required to Perform Essential Job Functions:

Physical Requirements: Must be able to use various equipment and classroom tools such as computers copiers calculators pencils scissors and equipment for students with special needs etc. Must be able to exert a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift carry push pull or otherwise move objects. Due to the time spent standing and/or walking physical requirements are consistent with those for light work.

Data Conception: Requires the ability to compare and/or judge the readily observable functional structural or composite characteristics (similar to or divergent from evident standards) of data people or things.

Interpersonal Communication: Requires the ability to speak and/or signal people to convey or exchange information. Includes receiving instructions assignments and/or directions from superiors.

Language Ability: This requires the ability to read a variety of correspondence reports handbooks forms lists etc. and to prepare correspondence simple reports forms instructional materials etc. using a prescribed format.

Intelligence: Requires the ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to define problems collect data establish facts and draw valid conclusions; to interpret various technical instructions in mathematical or diagrammatic form; and to deal with several abstract and concrete variables.

Verbal Aptitude: The ability to record and deliver information explain procedures and follow oral and written instructions. Must communicate effectively and efficiently in various technical or professional languages including medical legal and counseling terminology.

Numerical Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize mathematical formulas add and subtract multiply and divide utilize decimals and percentages and apply the principles of descriptive statistics statistical inference and statistical theory.

Form/Spatial Aptitude: Requires the ability to inspect items for proper length width and shape.

Motor Coordination: Requires the ability to coordinate hands and eyes rapidly and accurately when using office equipment.

Manual Dexterity: Requires handling items such as office equipment and hand tools. Must have minimal levels of eye/hand/foot coordination.

Color Discrimination: Requires the ability to differentiate between colors and shades of color.

Interpersonal Temperament: Requires the ability to deal with people beyond giving and receiving instructions. Must be adaptable to performing under stress and when confronted with emergencies.

Physical Communication: Requires the ability to talk and hear (talking: expressing or exchanging ideas using spoken words; hearing: perceiving the nature of sounds by ear).

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
Ability to create a positive environment where students can learn innovate and collaborate.

  • Ability to design and deliver engaging STEAM lessons and activities that align with state and national standards and promote critical thinking problem-solving and creativity.
  • Ability to design and develop the STEAM curriculum for elementary students including selecting appropriate learning resources creating lesson plans and integrating interdisciplinary activities.
  • Knowledge of STEAM content.
  • Knowledge of teaching principles practices techniques and approaches.
  • Knowledge of assessment procedures and techniques test construction and evaluation methods.
  • Knowledge of classroom/behavior management.
  • Ability to monitor student performance and differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all learners.
  • Ability to plan coordinate and continuously improve instruction.
  • Ability to analyze situations determine options and make appropriate decisions based on data.
  • Ability to use a variety of technology and classroom tools.
  • Ability to manage instructional time and student behavior.
  • Ability to consult with parents teachers administrators and the community to enhance student learning.
  • Ability to constantly monitor students safety and well-being particularly when participating in an inclusive activity.
  • Ability to motivate students.
  • Ability to maintain a clean and orderly environment. Ability to perform general clerical duties.
  • Ability to maintain order and discipline in a classroom. Ability to operate standard office machines.
  • Ability to maintain essential files and records.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments.

Term of Employment: 10 Months

FLSA Status: Exempt

Salary Grade: NC Teacher Salary plus Local Supplement
