Position Title: Deputy Director of Recreation Department: Parks & Recreation Division: Administration Salary: Exempt Salary - Negotiable Closing: Open until July 28 2025
Job Summary/Scope:
Provide assistance to director in planning organizing directing and coordinating the activities of the department. Manages certain department facilities and programs. Assists the director with preparation administration and monitoring of the department budget. Direct and indirect supervisory responsibilities.
Supervisory Responsibility:
Integral to the position of Deputy Director of Recreation is the responsibility for developing subordinates to their fullest potential by exercising appropriate degrees of coaching training guiding evaluating correcting and if necessary disciplining.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities: - Supervises pool activities and employees.
- Aids Aquatic Managers in scheduling employees for operations of aquatic facilities.
- Training and testing staff before & during the aquatic season.
- Coordinates departmental programs with specific facilities.
- Assists the director with the development and implementation of departmental goals objectives policies and priorities for each assigned service area
- Supervises daily events activities and work priorities of staff.
- Administers contracts with users concessionaires and facilities.
- Assists in writing Ordinance and Resolutions for department.
- Coordinates and responds to resident requests pertaining to departmental issues.
- Oversees administration of insurance matters and departmental safety and loss control compliance needs. Coordinates efforts of Risk Management.
- Coordinates competitive sports tournaments on regional national and international levels.
- Handles public relations issues regarding Parks & Recreation.
- Coordinates public relations functions through newspapers television and radio and develops pamphlets flyers and other information bulletins in coordination with the Communications Manager.
- Assists in preparation of formal bids.
- Oversees disciplinary action for department.
- Fulfills directors duties and responsibilities in absence of Director
- Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Required (Essential) Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
- Skills in effective oral and written communications and public relations.
- Knowledge of municipal budgeting procedures as well as general account and purchasing.
- Skills in employment and personnel management matters
- Ability to supervise and direct the work activities of others.
- Ability to work well with individuals as well as groups both internal (within the department) and external (volunteer groups etc.)
- Must be available to work irregular hours and at various intervals including weekends holidays and evening hours.
- Knowledge of recreation activities modern principles and practices of recreation program planning and execution as well as facility maintenance.
- Three to five years of experience in recreational program administration or business administration is required.
- Must have good working knowledge of pool operations including equipment chemical balances cleaning and safety factors.
- Must have American Red Cross lifeguarding CPR AED certifications or ability to obtain.
- Valid drivers license required.
Material and Equipment Directly Used:
Use of computer and all related software application programs. Use of a variety of related office equipment such as copy machine fax typewriter calculator and telephone system. There may be times when use of personal vehicle may be required. Operates light vehicles and variety of office and recreational equipment.
Education: Bachelors Degree in recreation leisure management public or business administration or related field. Direct experience in management in a parks and recreation department of a suitably sized city may be considered at the rate of three years experience for each year of a Bachelors Degree program. Experience with management of a public or private pool required. First aid CPR AED certification Red Cross lifeguard training and instruction required. Current CPO (Certified Pool Operator) or AFO (Aquatic Facility Operator) license also preferred. WSI and Lifeguard Instructor preferred. Passing of a drug screening required prior to appointment.
