Position: Train Service Employee
Job Summary:
A conductor operates track switches couples and uncouples railcars and performs other duties associated with the movement of trains railcars and engines on the main line of the railroad and in rail yards. He or she receives relays or acts upon oral written or radio instructions from the dispatcher trainmaster or other personnel indicating the switch movement placement or delivery of railcars and/or a train.
Responsibilities:
Demonstrate ability to perform work in compliance with FRA regulations and railroad operating rules
Current FRA Certification for Locomotive Engineer and Conductor preferred
Must be willing and able to work as Conductor and Engineer as needed or required
RCO qualified preferred
Work safely to prevent accidents incidents and injuries
Communicate with crew members regarding switching orders and which railcars are to be moved to specified locations of yard using radio telephone verbal or hand signals
Gives instructions to throw track switches and to couple and uncouple railcars
May assist workers to throw switches or perform other activities involved when performing switching operations
Proficient in flat switching
Responsible for marking switch list
Maintains records number origin destination and cargo of cars switched
May coordinate activities of switching crew from locomotive cab ground or office
Throw track switches to facilitate switching of cars
Assemble and disassemble trains in accordance with blocking classification
hazmat rules and other requirements
Turn hand brake wheel or ratchet type brake to apply and release handbrakes
Provide safe efficient movement of rail cars
Perform required equipment inspections and brake tests
Observe track to detect obstructions or defects
Operate cut lever to couple or uncouple cars
Connect air hose to cars when making up trains by bending and applying force
Sit or ride in cab of locomotive with other crew members to observe track conditions
May make minor repairs to couplings and air hoses and report any equipment requiring major repairs
Monitor gauges and meters on locomotive
Properly uses throttle and brake controls
Use skill and judgment to operate without damaging equipment track structures or lading
Interpret train orders signals railroad rules and regulations that govern locomotive operation
Inspect locomotives to verify adequate fuel sand water supplies and FRA compliance
When needed add sand water fuel or make other minor repairs to locomotives as required
Inspect locomotives for mechanical issues and report to proper person
Ensure proper documentation is available in locomotive cab
Use proper PPE including vest safety glasses gloves steel toed boots
Coordinate and communicate with multiple other railroads and rail crews
Coordinate with Maintenance of Way and Mechanical departments to create efficient railroad operation
Communicate with crew members to give or receive switching information move cars using lantern hand signals or radio
Receive oral or written instructions from Manager or Customer indicating which cars are to be switched
Coordinate with customers in a professional manner
Communicate with train dispatcher regarding train operations
Learn from directions observations and mistakes and apply procedures using good judgment
Performs other duties as requested or required
Working Conditions:
Irregular hours including nights weekends and holidays
Subject to a 2 hour call out
Perform work in all weather conditions including heat cold rain and storms
24/7 operation
Lift up to 50 lbs.
Must be able to stand and walk for long periods of time
Must be willing to perform manual labor
Qualifications:
Ability to complete tasks with minimal supervision
Ability to complete and pass all railroad exams unassisted
Ability to take directives from management and co-workers
Demonstrate problem solving and troubleshooting skills resulting in effective resolution
Proficient using computers tablets and other electronic devices including Microsoft word Outlook and Google Chrome
High School or GED required
Valid Driver License
Clean Motor Vehicle Driving Record
Ability to pass FRA physical drug and alcohol test; background check also required
