THE ROLE

The Koori Way is a statewide population health promotion campaign co-designed and facilitated by multiple Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations across Victoria to discourage Koori people across Victoria from using tobacco and vaping products.

The koori way worker will work with the GAC community to deliver health promotion and community development strategies.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

TIS Promotion

Provide health education and recourses for individuals families and groups that is culturally sensitive and appropriate. He/she will demonstrate and teach appropriate skills for health maintenance and prevention of accident and illness.

Work collaboratively with:

Kirrae Health service Wind-mara Aboriginal cooperation and Dhauwurd-wurrung elderly and community health service to deliver the program.

Deliver TIS/Flip the vape promotion strategies that align to the National Tackling Indigenous Smoking program. in collaboration with Health Services and other stake holders in the promotion of positive health outcomes for our community.

Work with local partners and key stakeholders to provide an integrated approach to health promotion and prevention activities. Develop and maintain productive working relationships with key stakeholders.

Work closely with Gunditjmaras health teams to deliver flip the vape promotion events to the community.

Conduct program evaluation and research collect and record statistics for TIS promotion and education activities.

Provide reports to managers associated committees and other relevant parties. Undertake administrative duties as required in accordance with program and operational guidelines.

Maybe required to travel to other regions including overnight stays as required to ensure that program objectives are met.

Administration

Work the AOD/Justice Team leader and where required extended Health Services staff to plan all related service delivery.

Identify opportunities to expand GAC service delivery in Flip the vape promotion and nutrition targeting priority groups including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders Elders and others at risk of acute or chronic illness.

THE IDEAL PERSON FOR THIS ROLE

Essential

Identifies as an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.

Sound knowledge and understanding of Aboriginal culture and values and the ability to communicate effectively with Aboriginal people.

Ability to work effectively with Aboriginal organisations government departments and community service organisations.

Demonstrated ability to implement and evaluate community-based health promotion activities.

Willingness to participate in training and ongoing supervision.

Capacity to develop plan implement manage and evaluate health promotion activities.

Sound knowledge of local issues and needs of the Aboriginal Community in particular issues relating to positive health promotion strategies.

Well-developed written and oral communication skills and the ability to prepare reports.

Proven ability to work as part of a team.

Strong organisational skills including the ability to use initiative set priorities and to plan and act to achieve desired outcomes within specific timeframes.

Ability to use a computer and familiarity with the MS Office applications.

Mature and confident personality.

A current Victorian Drivers Licence is required.

Desirable

Tertiary qualifications in relevant discipline e.g. Health Promotion Public Health Allied Health.
