Position Overview
Austin PBS is seeking a Special Project Archive Intern to support an ongoing oral history initiative aimed at preserving and honoring the legacy of the station. This paid internship offers hands-on experience working closely with the Director of Archives and is ideal for non-traditional students who are passionate about community storytelling cultural memory and archival practice.

The intern will play a vital role in documenting organizing and ethically preserving first-person narratives from staff collaborators and community members. This position is ideal for students pursuing degrees such as but not limited to anthropology sociology history psychology human resources or related fields with an interest in public history qualitative research or community engagement.


Role & Responsibilities

  • Assist in conducting oral history interviews including scheduling preparing questions and transcribing recordings
  • Support the management of metadata creation and content for collected interviews
  • Ensure compliance with Institutional Review Board (IRB) standards and informed consent procedure
  • Help design and maintain an accessible archive of oral history materials
  • Contribute to the planning and execution of community storytelling events or pop-up exhibits
  • Collaborate on qualitative analysis and organization of interview data for future storytelling exhibits or research

Physical Demands
This role primarily takes place in a general office environment with potential travel for off-site interviews or events. Some light lifting may be required when working with archival materials or equipment.

Requirements

Minimum Qualifications

  • Current undergraduate student must be actively enrolled in an accredited college or university degree program during the full duration of the internship
  • Currently enrolled in fields such as anthropology history human resources psychology sociology or related fields
    Interest in oral history public media community storytelling or archival studies
  • Internship will be in-person
  • Student must be available for a minimum of 13 weeks of this internship
  • Excellent interpersonal communication skills with empathy and discretion
  • Familiarity with research ethics IRB protocol and informed consent principles is a plus
  • Prior experience with qualitative data analysis transcription or conducting interviews is highly desirable
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating closely with internal teams across departments
